Shelly McCammon, 71, passed away peacefully with her family surrounding her with love on April 24, 2024, at Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph Hospital in Wichita, Kan. She had suffered with weakened lungs after a bout of pneumonia in January. It was far too soon. Shelly’s family was the center of her world. Danny McCammon, her husband of 35 years, was her sweetheart, her best friend, and her favorite person to watch sports with, cheering on the KU Jayhawks, the Chiefs, and the Royals. They hosted the best pool parties and cooked the best food for anyone who wanted to show up. They loved their beach time in Florida every year. They spoiled their ornery little puppy, Dolly Rose. Her kids and grandkids were her joy. Daughter Lisa Jones (Lawrence, Kan.) is her carbon copy in many ways. Both fierce “mama bears” and nurturers, they had a precious bond that cannot be described. Lisa’s girls, Isabella (22), Zoe (19) and Molly (13), were all “grandma’s girls,” and they will treasure their fun memories with her. Oldest son, Todd Voth (and Jessica, Owasso, Okla.), always claimed to be her favorite child. She spoiled him with birthday cakes every year and he loved to give her silly salt and pepper shaker sets. His two children, Olivia (19) and Jackson (15), had a special place in grandma’s heart. They loved to visit, hang out with grandma in the pool, and enjoyed her “food parties.” Youngest son, Chase McCammon (Wichita, Kan.), was the baby of the family. Always a “momma’s boy,” Chase and Shelly talked every day. He loved to tease her and make her laugh. His daughter, Addison (14), loved doing crafts and snuggling with her grammy. Younger brother, Craig Gastineau (Wichita, Kan.), was very close with Shelly. He loved her good food and helped make her famous Christmas cookies every year. Craig has two children, Kimberly (35) and Derrick (33). They were very special to Shelly. She helped raise her baby sister, Nancy Lay (Urbandale, Iowa). They had so much fun together in Florida every year and loved to laugh together with inside sister jokes. Nancy has two sons, Ryan (34) and Taylor (29), who adored their aunt Shelly. Shelly’s precious mother, Norma Hawkins, died in 2016. Her father, Ellis Robert Gastineau, died in 1969. Older brother Gary Gastineau passed in 2009. Shelly also lost an infant son, Jeffrey David Voth, in 1969. Memorial Service will be at 10:00 am, Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Downing & Lahey West Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to two of Shelly's favorite charities: The Lord's Diner, 520 North Broadway, Wichita, Kansas 67214 and Kansas Humane Society, 3313 North Hillside, Wichita, Kansas 67219. We would love for you to wear bright and happy clothing to the service. Shelly will love that.

  1. Heartfelt prayers to Shelly’s family for comfort and peace. We will miss her so much. She loved hard and it could be felt through hugs and kisses all over your face! I told her how much I loved that! 🥲 She gave her whole heart to her family and you could hear the happiness and pride in her voice as she spoke of her children and grandchildren. Her love for Danny was pure sweetness. They had a beautiful life together! She loved her siblings so much and I am thankful Nancy shared Shelly with me. I am blessed that she called me “sister”. We will miss her at Thanksgiving and her years of being an “angel” putting meals together and bringing supplies. Rest in peace sister Shelly! We will absolutely meet again!
Much love, Paul ♥️ Julie Headley

  2. Shelly was my supervisor at HCBC, but she was much more than that. I was a transplant from Louisville, KY & had no family in Wichita. Shelly invited my 2 kids and me over for Easter so we wouldn’t have to spend it alone. Not only did we eat her delicious dinner, but she also hid eggs so my kids could have an Easter egg hunt.
On another occasion, I was going to visit my hometown-a 12 hour drive- with my 2 young children. Cell phones were new & not everyone had one, including me. Shelly was adamant that I take her phone with me in case something happened. No questions asked- she insisted that I take her phone for the weekend.
That was just Shelly’s nature. She cared about us girls on her team more than just as employees.
I felt like I knew her kids and husband from how much she talked about them. She doted over baby Isabella and referred to her husband as ‘Dan the Man’ or ‘Hairball’
No doubt the void she’s leaving in her family is huge. I pray that they find comfort in the wonderful memories they have of Shelly.
