Mike Herring

October 25, 2007
Herring, Mike, 68, died Thursday, October 25, 2007, in his sleep. Memorial service 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, October 30, Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church. He was lovingly referred to as “Poppa” by his six grandchildren and just about everyone else that knew him. Mike, along with his family, owned Younger Duds childrens clothing store in Wichita. Throughout the years Mike helped many of Wichitas children find shoes that fit and took pride in providing great customer service. After retiring from the retail business in 2001, Mike did not slow down. He worked part-time at Flint Hills Therapeutic Riding and spent the rest of his time helping out friends and family with anything they needed. He gave back to the Wichita community that gave so much to him by volunteering at Hyde Elementary School, Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church, Habitat for Humanity, East High and various other charitable causes. Mike gave the best hugs, cooked the best potato soup, made the best homemade salsa and told the best stories. He loved spending time with his family, especially if it involved his grandchildren and their friends. He was also a skilled craftsman who made beautiful handmade knives and wood crafts. Mike is preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Missy Heiman. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Darlene Herring, his daughter, Cristy Anderson (husband, Brent Anderson), and his grandchildren, Eva Anderson, Erick Heiman, Ana Anderson, Blake Heiman, Ike Anderson, and Grant Heiman and son-in-law, Mark Heiman. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church, 1600 W. 27th Street N., Wichita, KS 67204. Downing Lahey Mortuary East.
Please accept our deepest condolences for your family’s loss.
Mike was truely a blessing given to us from God. I have only known Mike for a short time but he was a mentor for me. Watching him, and how he cared for people, giving a smile, a handshake, and even the words that warm a person inside, makes me feel blessed that I knew him. May the Lord bless and keep all of you in this time of loss. Cheryl and I pray for you and your comfort.

How sad we were upon hearing of Mike’s passing. He was a wonderful next door neighbor, always quick with a smile, a story, or a helping hand. Our thought and prayers are with Darlene and their family. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
I only knew Mike for a short time during his employment at Flint Hills Therapy Center. The first time I met him I thought he was just one of the nicest people I had met in a long time. Always friendly, quite the jokester, and always willing to lend me a hand with my horses. As a matter of fact I was quite sad when I learned he had quit working out there. Luckily I got to see him just a couple of weeks ago and the annual hoe down benefit for the Therapy Center. I’m so glad that I got to talk and joke around with him for a awhile. The thought that I will never get to do that again breaks my heart. But I’m so thankful that I did get to see him one last time. Reading his obituary confirms what an extrodinary man I suspected him to be. I only wish that I could have known him better other than the brief time I did know him. I’m sure the world will be much lesser of a place with his loss. But your family was quite lucky to have had him and I’m sure all the wonderful memories that he created for you will help you through this terrible time of loss.
Darlene, Cristy and family – We grieve with you, for Mike and his enthusiasm for life and blessing others will be missed. His love was contagious, his example remarkable. We rejoice that he has realized his eternal reward and gone to meet his Savior. You are all in our prayers. If there’s anything that we can do, you know how to reach us.
Darlene My heart hurts for you with the loss of Mike. I was so shocked to hear the tragic news. Please know my prayers are with you.

To the family …I knew you all from the store, when my daughter started pagents. Mike liked what he saw and helped find her just the right clothes. I still have several outfits that he hand picked for her. One was the beautiful teal dress he found at market and brought home , just for her. Mike love the kids! He always kept in mind what looked good for them. Mike was a winner in our heart just as my daughter was a winner in pagents because of Mike. Jennifer was 10 when we started pagents and loved it all because of ‘her Mike’ . Thank you for being such a caring family! My God bless you and keep you close at this time.
I am so very sorry this morning to read of Mike’s passing. He has always been so kind to me and my son, Mike. We will miss his solid, uplifting, positive presence among our church family. We pray for peace for each of you at this time.
