Oppliger, Nadine, 80, lost a very private and dignified battle with cancer on February 7, 2009. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday February 10, at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Dwight “Bud”; children, Terry and wife Jan, Debbie Walker Christiansen and husband Norm, Jodi Bartman and husband Brent; six grandchildren; sister, Edna Wegele, of Ness City, KS. Nadine will be remembered by the bowling community as the gracious proprietor of Thunderbird Bowl since 1974 who was named National Proprietor of the Year and inducted into both the Wichita and Kansas Bowling Halls of Fame and who held numerous bowling titles. But those who knew Nadine the best know that her most proud and beloved accomplishments were away from the bowling lanes. She was a fiercely private individual who smiled easily and made customers feel welcomed but saved her true warmth for the love of her family. She loved working and playing with her family, welcomed extended family members and cherished private times and holiday traditions. In addition to the immediate family members, she leaves behind her very best friend, Marge Kaylor, and the love and affection of many dogs, cats, and other animals. Her love of bowling, her softness for animals and her immense love of family will live on through the love and memories of her surviving family, close friends and the bowling community. Memorials have been established with Harry Hynes memorial Hospice 313 S. Market Wichita, KS 67202; Kansas Humane Society 4218 S.E. Blvd Wichita, KS 67210

  1. Dear Uncle Bud, Cousin Terry, Debbie, and Jody, Dad Larry has been forwarding us emails and updates. I am grateful for that communication. It is wonderful to read through these tributes. Aunt Nadine was obviously a very well-loved, well-respected member of her community. You are so lucky to have been blessed with such a wonderful woman as wife and mother and grandmother. I wish circumstances had arranged themselves such that I would have gotten to interact with her more. I certainly have always enjoyed hearing the stories about her over the years. Know that there is love and kindness coming your way, spoken and unspoken. It is hard to know what to say at the time of such a profound loss. May you find solace and comfort in your hearts, memories, family, friends, and prayer if that is your way. Peace and love, Beth Oppliger (Larry’s oldest daughter)

  2. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We know Nadine had suffered terribly the last months of her life and now her suffering is over and she’s in great hands. Please accept our sincere condolences on your loss. She was a wonderful person and will be missed by all who knew her.

  3. Nadine is a great loss to humanity. I know her as part of the bowling family. She was always gracious, friendly and kind to anyone she knew. When I was a board member of the Wichita Women’s Bowling Association, she always went out of her way to help with any tournaments, fund raisers or promotions we were conducting. As a league bowler she was helpful and accommodating. As a friend…all I can say is that there was none better. I will miss here dearly. To the family I share in your grief and will be always thinking of you.

  4. We joined the Thunderbird Youth program 9 years ago on Saturday mornings. Nadine always asked how Hunter and Casey bowled and took the extra effort to know them by name as well as offering a friendly hello and smile every time we entered the building. As our loved ones pass, a part of them become a part of us. Her presence will continue to be felt through her fantastic family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.–The Bennetts Kim, Darrin, Hunter and Casey

  5. I had the pleasure of working with Nadine just prior to the time she left Crestview. I grew to admire her many wonderful qualities. Not only was she a highly skilled bowler, but she had an amazing ability to interact with people. She had a terrific sense of humor but most important to her was her family. I would like to think that from now on when I hear a clap of thunder, that means Nadine just rolled another strike up in the sky.

  6. Dear Uncle Bud: We are sorry for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family in this time of sorrow. Scott, Vyvian and Lauren Oppliger

  7. Bud and family, my thoughts and prayers are with you. Nadine never knew a stranger and was always friendly to everyone she met. I enjoyed bowling with her many years ago. We always had fun. Bud may God continue to bless you and your family. Knowing that Nadine is at peace and with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is such a blessing.

  8. Bud,Debbie and others–Very sorry to hear about Nadine.Connie Polly and I are truly sad and wish for all the family members to have peace and know that they are in our prayers–She was a fine lady-We will be unable to be at that servicies but please know that we will be with you–don peters

  9. Words can not describe about how i feel about Nadine. She was by far one of the greatest women i have ever known. Knowing her my entire life i knew she was kinda and always thought about and loved her family and friends. I send my love to the family as they face this ordeal and pray that they stay strong through thick and thin of life’s situations.
