Nancy Lee (Gill) Alamo 96, of Wichita, Kansas, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on August 22, 2020. She loved Jesus with her whole heart, mind, soul, and strength. The single most important thing she would desire for her friends and family to know is that loving and trusting Jesus is the key to a life of meaning, peace, and hope. A private graveside service for the family was held at White Chapel Gardens in Wichita, KS. Born in Lebanon, Virginia on June 3, 1924, to Clyde and Harriet Hurt, she met Robert J. Gill while working for the Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C. during WW2. After three dates he asked her to marry him. Robert and Nancy were united in marriage on Nov. 14, 1943, and married for 50 years. To this union, four children were born: Ann Knecht (Steve), Susan Wilson (Dan), Rebecca Gill, and Julie Gill. Nancy was a retired elementary school teacher of 25 years in Wichita. Known as “The Insect Queen,” Nancy loved her students and loved science. She was known to read the Bible to her students daily, even when it was banned in public schools. Her classroom was not only about learning the wonders of the world but about learning right from wrong and making good choices that would lead to a good and fruitful life. Although Nancy was a teacher by trade, she was a life-long learner. She especially loved astronomy, geology, entomology, and paleontology. She loved reading and kept up on the local news, even hosting a weekly newspaper discussion group at Emporia Place, her residence in Emporia, KS in recent years. Among her most treasured memories were the summers spent at her family mountain cabin in Crested Butte, Colorado where she would study and teach her grandchildren about wildlife, wildflowers, and constellations. Her faith in Jesus provided a legacy of faith that has been passed down to 6 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren and generations to come. Nancy was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister, her first grandchild, and her beloved husband, Robert J. Gill, and her second husband, Frank Alamo. Memorial Contributions may be sent to: Gideon’s International: P.O. Box 20741, Wichita, KS 67208. Services in care of Downing & Lahey East Mortuary.

Guestbook

  1. Dear Dan & Susan, Nancy left her imprint on so many lives, her reunions in Heaven with the people that she touched will be going on for a long time! We served many years together on the C.E. Council, Nancy was always gracious and her love for Jesus was always at the forefront of her life. I have so many wonderful memories of her. God bless your family with peace and joy for Nancy’s extraordinary life! -Ron Perkins

  2. Ann, Sue, Becky, and Julie…your mom has been part of my memories since childhood, slumber parties where we were out on the lawn at what seemed like dawn to salute the flag…her welcoming, accepting, warm personality…her constant expressions of God’s goodness…it’s hard to put into words what an influence she was for me and scores of others. Love and prayers. Carol Lorenson

  3. I read with sadness that Nancy had left us; however she has moved to her eternal home. Heaven will be even more wonderful because she’s there. What a wonderful person she was. We taught together at Mueller. She made mints for our wedding and shared in the joys of the birth of our son. She made life special with those with whom she came in contact. She left a legacy to be envied. We send our sympathy to her family. Joan Pollock for the two of us

  4. Our family is very sad to hear about the passing of Nancy. She was a teacher to our kids and was so great at her craft. Her years teaching at Hyde Elementary in Wichita left an indelible mark on the lives of so many students and families. R.I.P. Nancy Gill Alamo!!🌹🙏 The Steve Wendt Family

  5. It was with sadness that we saw your lovely mother’s obituary this morning. We were fortunate to have Nancy as our neighbor for 14 years. She was such a positive, caring person. I missed her when she needed to move from her house for health reasons. I can still see her sitting at the kitchen table with her little poodle Sofia. Much sympathy to you her family. Nancy & Scott Singleton

  6. Nancy was an amazing person who truly loved Jesus and lived for Him. She had a lasting impact on our family through her leadership of the Cubbies program at FEFC and her constant expressions of love and kindness. Our entire family views her as a special person who will not be forgotten!

  7. Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. William Butler Yeats Mrs. Gill, as I knew her as a student at Mueller, always carried a burning torch. Sincere sympathy to her family and counted blessings to those who knew her. Bruce Fritz

  8. Mrs. Gill, as our family knew her, was the best teacher our son, Ryan Robertson, ever had. She was loving, kind and Christian. He learned so much that year about everything as we all did. She also loved that particular class SO much that she started a bible study every Saturday morning at her home. What she taught him has helped him be the wonderful man he is today as a son, husband, father and friend. May our thoughts and prayers help the family know how much we loved her. Barb and Larry Robertson

  9. We are so sorry to hear of your loss. Nancy was a great friend for years. Raoul loved doing her hair. She always so cheerful and had a big smile on her face. We went to her home many times and always welcomed with open arms. God knows that He now has another angel with him. You have our deepest sympathy and prayers. She will always be remembered. We loved the poem she wrote. Raoul and Isabelle Del Castillo

  10. My daughter was privileged to have Ms. Gill for 2 years in grade school. What an inspirational teacher she was. I still have sayings that I learned from her via my daughter. May comfort and peace envelope her family. Loretta Phares
