It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Nellie Jackson, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, on March 31, 2026. Nellie left this world as she lived in it-peacefully and with grace, surrounded by the love of her family after a short illness. She was 96 years old.
Born on July 5, 1929, in Wichita, Kansas, Nellie grew up in a community that would shape her generous spirit and boundless curiosity. She attended Wichita High School and furthered her education at Emporia Teachers College, where she cultivated a passion for learning and imparting knowledge to others. Nellie’s career as a primary school teacher and later a medical transcriber highlighted her commitment to serving others, a value she cherished deeply. Nellie was married to her beloved husband, Robert, with whom she shared a long and joyful marriage. Together, they raised three wonderful sons: Richard, Thomas, and their surviving son, Robert. Her devotion to her family was unmatched, and she found immense joy in their happiness and accomplishments.
Predeceased by her husband Robert and sons Richard and Thomas, Nellie is survived by her son Robert and his wife Jane, her cherished grandchildren Lauren Bruce and Eric Prochnow, and her precious great-grandchildren, Camille and Aubrey. She also leaves behind many dear nieces and nephews who will forever hold her memory in their hearts.
Nellie’s life was enriched by her love for music, particularly playing the piano and keyboard. Her talent found an outlet in a volunteer choir group, where she sang and brought joy to churches and nursing homes. Her love for people was evident in her ability to make friends easily and her delight in engaging with individuals from diverse backgrounds. A woman of many talents, Nellie had a passion for journaling and meticulously keeping track of family history. She was an enthusiastic Scrabble player, often emerging victorious, much to the delight and sometimes dismay of her family and friends. Her quick wit and positivity were constants in her life, offering light and laughter even in her final days. Beyond her hobbies and interests, Nellie’s greatest legacy is her enduring love for her family. She was a beacon of strength, positivity, and adaptability, moving across the country three times to be closer to those she held dear.
A service to honor and celebrate Nellie’s remarkable life will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Downing & Lahey West Mortuary, located at 10515 West Maple, Wichita, KS.
