Norma J. Smith

Smith, Norma Jean, 84, passed away Thursday, May 30, 2013. She was born September 25, 1928 in Wichita, KS to H. J. (“Bud”) and Lois (Newton) Haley. Norma was a graduate of Wichita East High School Class of 1946. She was a member of Pi Kappa Psi and was the 1950 Homecoming Queen at Wichita University. Norma graduated in 1951 with a degree in education. She worked third shift at Boeing while in college. Norma married Bill Smith on September 2, 1951. She taught P.E. at East High, then at West High when it opened. In 1961 Norma and Bill moved to Kansas City to raise their four children. There she worked for National Equipment and Holiday House a number of years, then bought the store and became president. After retirement, Norma and Bill returned to the Wichita area. She is preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Rosella Taylor; and one brother, Royce Haley. She is survived by her husband, Bill; sons, Doug (Dianna) of Augusta, KS, Dave (Rita) of Beatrice, NE, Scott (Adriana) of Sunnyvale, CA; daughter, Stephanie (Steve) Moser of Dallas, TX; 11 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson. A memorial has been established with Rock Springs Ranch 4-H, c/o Kansas 4H Foundation, 116 Umberger Hall, Manhattan, KS 66506. Private Family Services will be held.
