Patricia "Pat" (Porter) Huffman

Patricia “Pat” (Porter) Huffman passed away Friday, March 4, 2022, in Wichita, KS. Pat was born in Utopia, KS on October 5, 1924. She was raised and educated mostly in Burdett, KS, but did spend some childhood time in Arizona and Southern California, where she graduated from high school in 1942.
Pat married Clarence Huffman on June 16, 1944, in Shelbyville, TN. They lived in California for a short time after Clarence returned from WWII and then moved back to Burdett.
Pat is survived by her son Dan (Sharon) Huffman of Metropolis, IL; granddaughter, Sarah (Luke) Grace and their sons Landon Grace and Lane Grace all of Paducah, KY; granddaughter, Bethany (Brandon) Fisher and their daughter Chloe Fisher and sons Cohen Fisher and Carter Fisher all of Troy, IL; granddaughter, Brittany (Tim) Barton and their sons Mason Barton and Jonah Barton and daughter Harper Barton all of Paducah, KY; and her daughter Judi (Roger) Timken of Manhattan, KS; grandson, Chad (Beth) Timken and their daughters Madi Timken and Meridy Timken all of Edmond, OK; granddaughter, Jacey (Jason) Maier and their son Jacob Maier and daughter Claire Maier all of Parker, CO; granddaughter, Jenna (Torrey) Mindrebo and their daughter Scarlett Mindrebo and son Malcolm Mindrebo all of Indianapolis, IN.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents Forrest Alvin Porter and Eunice Mabel (Marriott) Porter and husband Clarence Robert Huffman.
Pat had a very active life. She received an Associate Degree from Compton Community College in Compton, California. While in school, she played in the band and marched in the Rose Parade once and performed in the Rose Bowl several times. She attended many dances for soldiers, sailors and marines before they were shipped to the South Pacific to fight in WWII. Later, back in Kansas, she sang in the church choir, taught young girls for many years how to sew as a 4-H leader, actively participated in the American Legion Auxiliary, was a Kansas Girl’s State counselor for more than 30 years, directed school plays, and enjoyed playing bridge. She also was a very talented artist, painting mostly with acrylics. She retired in 1990, after working for 32 years as the secretary/treasurer of Pawnee Heights USD 496, and moved to Wichita, where she continued to be active in community events. In Wichita she joined a service sorority, worked in music theatre sewing costumes, volunteered at the VA Center and enjoyed traveling with friends.
A celebration of her life will be held at Mary C. Norris United Methodist Church, Burdett, KS at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, May 31, 2022. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established with the Huffman Family Scholarship (benefitting graduates of Pawnee Heights High School), c/o Southern Illinois Community Foundation, P.O. I met Pat through the Wichita school district’s secretarial organization. She was instantly a friend – as though we had known each other for years. She was a delight to be around. Indeed, a life well lived! -Angie Herbert
