Paul D. Howe

June 4, 1956 ~ November 1, 2024
Paul D. Howe, age 68, went to be with the Lord on November 1, 2024. He was born on June 4, 1956 in Wichita, KS to Roy and Louise Howe. He grew up in Goddard, KS, graduating high school in 1974. He went on to attend Friends University in Wichita, KS. While attending Friends University, he met his wife, Linda (Goudie) Howe, where they were married on May 28, 1977.
During his time at Friends University, he earned his degree in Music Education & Music Performance. He was a member of multiple instrumental ensembles, as well as Singing Quakers. While on summer breaks at Friends, he also traveled and played trumpet professionally. He was a founding member of the Friends University Alumni Jazz Band, and also performed with various jazz groups around the Wichita area.
In 1983, Paul and Linda welcomed their first daughter, Melissa. Later, in 1987, they welcomed their second daughter, Jacqueline. Also in 1987, Paul went on to earn his Master’s Degree in Music Education with an Emphasis in Orchestral Conducting.
He was a Music Educator in public school for 37 years, and retired in May of 2017. He taught at Circle High School, El Dorado, Goddard, and finished his career at Mulvane Public Schools. He enjoyed taking his students on Marching Band and Jazz Band trips, going to multiple Bowl Games, and organizing ski trips. On those adventures, he enjoyed spending time with his students outside of the classroom, and wasn’t afraid to be a big kid himself.
While teaching at Mulvane, he was asked to establish a girls golf program. He coached them 18 years before he retired from public education. He was always so proud of his teams, especially when they won the State Championship in 2003. In January of 2017, he accepted the position of Head Coach of the Friends University Women’s Golf Team. He was still in that position until his passing. He loved his team dearly, and was passionate about inspiring young women to develop a love for the game.
In his free time, Paul loved to camp with his wife, long-time family friends, and his dog, Lily. He also enjoyed playing golf, woodworking, and cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs any chance he could get. He loved spending time with his family, and especially the addition of his two sons-in-law, who he lovingly referred to as “His Boys.”
Most of all, Paul was passionate about his relationship with Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was always uplifted by praise and worship music, and was willing to share his faith with others. His grandmother instilled in him a legacy of the following, “The most important thing I can leave to those I love is this: To live for what is right; to maintain a strong faith in God; and to love one another. I would leave them with this Scripture: “Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.” 1 John 4:11-12.
Paul is survived by his wife of 47 years, Linda; his daughters, Melissa Miller (Nick), and Jacqueline Thomas (John). His sister, Beverly Hammersmith; and brother, Eric Howe (Shannon). He is also survived by his father-in-law, Rev. George Goudie; and brother-in-law, Brian Goudie; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Roy Loo and Louise Howe; and his step-mother, MayBelle Howe. Also his brother, Larrell Howe; his brother-in-law, Steve Hammersmith; and his mother-in-law, Betty Goudie.

Mr. Howe was my band teacher from 6th grade all the way through 12th grade. When my dad passed away in November of 2009 my senior Mr. Howe was very supportive. Mr. Howe even played his trumpet at my dad’s graveside during the funeral as a final good bye of my dad’s favorite song.
Mr. Howe you will be truly missed!!!

Paul will be greatly missed. He was a wonderful golf coach and human being. He cared deeply for so many people and was loved just as much in return! He had such an impact on the loves of so many students, he was always a fixture in our lives.
Never forget all the golf van trips we had!! He always made them fun and interesting in his own quirky way. Then how after he retired he worked at Derby Country Club and he would always greet my Granny like he knew her his whole life. He never met a stranger. His smile was contagious and his laugh was too. He will be greatly missed by so many including me and my family. He made a huge difference and impact on anyone he came in contact with.
I am so sorry for your loss. Paul was a great man and I have many great memories of working with him. I am blessed to have known him.
I met Paul as a parent of a different College golf program (SWC) about 3 years ago. As I got to know Paul, I realized it didn’t matter that my daughter played for a different school…he was just as friendly to her and my family as he was his own. He loved the kids that he coached and was more passionate about them and their growth as people than their golf skills. Just a lovely human being. Man he could sure play that harmonica as well. I shared a few laughs with him recently at the Match Play event in Dodge City and know those events will never be the same without him. To all who knew him, loved, were coached by him and befriended by him, I am truly sorry for your loss. I do know he loved you and was passionate about each of you and I hope you all take comfort in knowing that. He sure knew how to make you feel special. My condolences and prayers to his family . Thank you for sharing him with us. John, Shelley, and Lauren Kelly
Mr.Howe was my band teacher in Mulvane. His energy and positivity was so contagious. He was an amazing teacher, mentor, and human being. Blessed to know him, he will be so missed!
I had the privilege of working with Mr. Howe at MHS concession stands. He was always so positive and upbeat. You could tell the way he took pride in the Jazz band that played at BB games and also the band that played at FB games and other events during the school year. He also had a love for golfing. Perhaps he is now playing with Arnold Palmer and Chi Chi Rodriguez. Rest in Peace Mr. Howe you will be missed

My family will always remember Paul as a kind, good natured, fun loving person that was always willing to help others and lend a hand. As extended family, it was so great to see him at reunions and always bringing love and a listening ear to all. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and close friends.
Paul was a light. His happy disposition was hard to stay grumpy around. Band was always an escape and time to be around friends. Band tests were the WORST! Fighting for a chair wasn’t fun, but that was the only thing I didn’t enjoy! He was an amazingly talented musician. Watching him play the trumpet was mesmerizing. I’ll always remember when he got Maynard Ferguson to play at Mulvane High. He was a friend to everyone: Popular, Nerdy, Jocks, introverts etc. I remember he once spoke back when students had made a joke about his wife. He spoke thunderously and swiftly: speaking of his love for her and that jokes like that were not permitted. Witnessing this made me respect him so much more and see him in a whole new light. He was so encouraging, kind, SO FUNNY, gentle, and sharp when needed. Bless you Mr. Howe. When we meet once again, I expect that wonderful bear of a hug.
I worked with Paul while at MHS. For my 40th birthday, he brought his band class to my room to play happy birthday to me. It was very special!! God Blessed him and his family!
I loved getting to see Paul at the KCAC women’s golf tournaments. I coach at Tabor and he was so in love with his team and girls and was so encouraging. He was always in a great mood and I especially loved his harmonica on the starting tees at events. I’m so saddened by his sudden death but I know he is in a wonderful place. Prayers to Paul’s family, friends and team. I can’t imagine how hard it must be for you now.
