Celebrating the life of Ronald Dean “Ron” Laird, affectionately known as “Papa,” who was born on August 23, 1954, in Wichita, KS, and passed away surrounded by his loving family on February 9, 2026. Ron lived a life marked by devotion to his family and a coach to many. He will forever be remembered as a stubborn and meticulous man, yet fiercely protective and deeply family oriented.
Ron married the love of his life, Cheryl Laird, on August 15, 1987, in a beautiful ceremony held in Cheryl’s parents’ home. Together, they shared 38 wonderful years of partnership, filled with dedicated love. Ron’s commitment to his family was unparalleled, often seen from the stands coaching baseball or sponsoring other children to ensure everyone had a chance to play regardless of their background.
A proud alum of Wichita Southeast High School, Ron furthered his education at Garden City Community College, where he played football on a scholarship. He later attained a bachelor’s degree in finance from Wichita State University. Education and perseverance laid the foundation for his successful career and his personal philosophy of life. Ron devoted his professional life to Boeing, where he made significant contributions, notably retiring from the Air Force One Program after a distinguished career.
Ron’s passions included boating at the lake, fervently watching sports, and attending family gatherings; activities that brought him great joy and relaxation. His greatest joy was coaching, demonstrating his commitment to nurturing younger generations.
Ron leaves behind a legacy through his children, Jake (Jessica) Quade, John (Kelsey) Quade, and Lindsay (Adam) Pahls, along with his cherished 10 grandchildren who will miss their “Papa” dearly. He is also survived by his sister, Linda Hannon, and two adored nieces. Ron was predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Mildred Laird.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to League 42, an organization reflecting Ron’s passion for baseball and community involvement. A memorial has been established with: League 42 Leslie Rudd Learning Center, 1212 E 17th Street N, Wichita, KS 67214.

Very sorry for your loss Cheryl & family. I always enjoyed working with Ron. Our condolences & prayers for your family. Sincerely, John & Linda Hogeland
Knew Ron from my early days at Boeing. He had that sense of humor, and was just one of the good guys – so enjoyable to be around. R.I.P. Ron, it was a pleasure knowing you.
Ron was my very first friend, and my best friend in grade school. We did all the things that kids do- little league, backyard sports, climb trees, sleepovers, ride our bikes all over the neighborhood, go to the Moo. He was a big part of my happy childhood. I last saw him at our 50th class reunion, and I’m glad we got to reminisce those fond memories. My sincere condolences to Cheryl and family.
My heart goes out to you Cheryl, Lyndsay,& the rest of your family. Praying for you daily. Ron was a great man who loved his family immensely. May God wrap His loving arms around you giving you comfort& strength during this difficult time. “To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord” I pray that knowing this will give you some peace❤️ I love you all🫂
I am so sorry for your loss. May all your wonderful memories as a family help heal your hearts.
I would love to get together with you sometime Cheryl.
