Rudolf Sauerwein, age 71, passed away on April 1, 2023. He was born on June 11, 1951 to proud parents Michel and Magdalena Sauerwein in Siegburg, Germany. In 1954 the family immigrated to Kansas, and “Rudi” grew up in Wichita. He graduated from Kapaun High School, then studied at Kansas State University followed by the University of Giessen. While there he met wife Doris and they moved back to Wichita, where he joined the growing family business, Sauerwein Construction Company. Rudi spent a fulfilling career working alongside his dad and brother, erecting fire stations, schools, buildings at the Sedgwick County Zoo, and many other facilities across the region. Rudi was a talented and passionate athlete, enjoying many sports like baseball, soccer, and golf. He loved a party, a good gin and tonic, German soccer, and most of all, his family. He was preceded in death by his parents. Rudi is mourned and survived by his wife of 43 years; brother, Frank (Beverly); his sons, Frank (Margarete) and Daniel; daughters, Nadine (Matthew) and Nicole; grandchildren, Hannah, Greta, Evelyn, and Caroline; his sisters in law and brothers in law; and nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Downing & Lahey East Mortuary, 6555 E. Central Ave in Wichita. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to the Michael J. 1. I remember “Rudi” from Wichita Fast-Pitch Softball days in the 1970’s and early 80’s. A good player, a good, good guy and a hoot to be around. Wonderful memories. Unforgettable.
Godspeed “Rudi”, and thank you for sharing a part of your life with us. My sympathies to “Rudi’s” family, friends and loved ones.

  2. Es gibt nur ein’ Rudi Sauerwein, yes, one only.Rudi was a friend to everyone. A great soccer player who played hard for his team. Win or lose, Rudi was there. We know where you are now there are great places to kick the ball around as well as great names to play with and score. We will always have you in our hearts and minds. In spirit you will always kick the ball around with us at Linwood. The Gang and Herb

  3. Back in 1982, the newspaper did an article on Fast Pitch umpires. I always teased Rudi telling him that I (Frank LaForge – umpire) made him famous. – God Bless you Rudi
