Shirley Jean (Horsch) O'Connell
Shirley Jean (Horsch) O'Connell, 79, died Wednesday, July 13, 2022. Rosary will be at 7:00 pm, Sunday, July 17, 2022, and Funeral Service will be at 10:00 am, Monday, July 18, 2022, both at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Jean was born in Emporia, Kansas on December 18, 1942. Jean graduated from North High School and Wichita State University and began her career teaching music. She taught at Bishop Carroll and a number of Catholic grade schools. Jean retired in 2012. She will be missed by numerous friends and relatives. Preceded in death by her first husband, Richard Horsch; parents, John and Dorothy Wining. Survived by her husband, Dan O'Connell of Wichita, KS; daughters, Melissa (Brent) Youngers, Amanda (Steve) Oakleaf; brother, James (Pam) Wining; step-daughter, Anne (Mark) Baker; step-son, Michael (Emily) O’Connell; grandchildren, Bryly (Manny) Youngers-Ozorio, Madison (Connor) Evans, Seth Oakleaf, Mark Baker, III, Abigail Baker; and great-granddaughter, Sawyer Evans. A memorial has been established with: St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 861 N. Socora, Wichita, KS 67212.

An outstanding band director, Mrs. O’Connell was responsible for instilling a love of music in my daughters as she patiently taught them to play, as she did many other young musicians. Her kindness and extra work greatly benefitted them as they went through school. Carol Kotsch
