Sonya Ropfogel
August 9, 1927 ~ February 23, 2015
Ropfogel, Sonya Ann (Bennett), our beautiful, dear mother, wife, grandmother and friend passed away on Monday, February 23, 2015, after a long and courageous journey with Alzheimers and Parkinsons. Sonya was born on August 9, 1927 in El Dorado, KS to Sarah (Abels) and Louis Bennett. She and her sister, Gercene, were lovingly raised by their father after their mother passed away when Sonya was 7 years old. She attended Indiana University and graduated with a degree in social work. After college, she moved to Kansas City for several years, and, through friends, met the love of her life, Leonard Ropfogel. After marriage in 1951, they lived in Emporia, KS for a number of years where all three of their daughters were born. Sonya and Leonard moved to Wichita, KS in 1967 where they enjoyed a very happy and loving life together. Sonya was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was a very kind, non-judgmental and patient person who always saw the best in everyone. Her daughters could always talk to her about anything! She offered optimism, love and support to all her family and friends. She enjoyed traveling, reading and close friendships, but her greatest joy was the time spent with Leonard and family. Her grandchildren called her “Nanny” and adored her. She is survived by her husband, Leonard; daughters, Susan (William) Popplewell of Kansas City, Terry Mueller of Dallas, Linda (Stephen) Murphy of Wichita; grandchildren, William and Leonard Popplewell of Kansas City, Laura Mueller of Denver, Michael Mueller of Dallas, Andrew, Bennett, Sonya Murphy of Wichita. The family also appreciates beyond measure her incredibly special caregivers these last years of her life. Thank you Natalia Ware, Leslie Kirkman, Cindy Sumner and Sharina Hearn. Words cannot express our appreciation for all you have done. Your kindness, patience, strength, and comforting presence have meant more to all of us than you can imagine. Funeral Service will be at 11:30 A.M., Friday, February 27, 2015, at Downing Lahey East Mortuary. Burial will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S. Market, Wichita, KS 67202; and Alzheimers Association, 1820 E. Douglas, Wichita, KS 67214.
