Captain Steve K. Atkinson - A Man of Valor With deep sorrow and profound respect, we announce the passing of Captain Steve K. Atkinson, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, and retired Captain of the Sedgwick County Fire Department, who left this world on February 28, 2025. Steve lived his life in selfless service to others, guided by honor, duty, and an unshakable commitment to helping those in need. Whether in uniform as a firefighter, assisting neighbors and friends, or standing beside his family, his strength, integrity, and generosity defined him. Steve married the love of his life, Bonnie, on June 16, 1979. Together, they built a life rooted in service to others and unwavering dedication to family. He was a devoted father to Diane Albert and Timothy Atkinson and proud grandfather to Liam and Logan. Steve answered the call to serve his community as a firefighter from 1991 to 2017, retiring as a Fire Captain. He was a member of the first Rescue Team established by the Sedgwick County Fire Dept., as well as a Dive Master and trainer for the Dive Rescue Team. He embodied a first responder's courage, sacrifice, and devotion, always running toward danger to protect others. His deep dedication to public safety and service will be remembered. Beyond his career, Steve was a man of many talents and passions. He was an expert diver, a skilled craftsman, and passionate about firearms and outdoor activities. He found joy in hunting, shooting, scuba diving, leatherworking, and woodworking. If he set his mind to something, he didn't just learn it-he mastered it. He was always building, fixing, and lending a hand, whether crafting with leather or wood, shoveling a neighbor's driveway, finishing a basement, or laying sod with a friend. His greatest joy was sharing these experiences with his best friend, Dan Wegner, with whom he shared an unbreakable bond. Steve's legacy is one of selflessness, bravery, and unwavering devotion. Steve was always watching over others, whether in a firehouse, at home, or in his community. He had the heart of a protector. He served his family and his entire community with quiet strength and a deep sense of responsibility. He was a true hero, not just in his profession but in every aspect of his life. He always made those around him feel respected, cherished, safe, and valued. Always leading with compassion, a strong moral compass, and a willingness to serve. His protection, wisdom, and laughter will echo in the hearts of those who knew him. Steve is survived by his wife of 45 years, Bonnie; his children, Diane (Marco) Albert and Timothy Atkinson; his grandsons, Liam and Logan. Dear friends that are more like family, Dan and Kathy Wegner, and their daughters, Nicole and Allison (Evan) and their children. He is also survived by his siblings, Kathy Atkinson, Michael (Jacki) Atkinson, Cindy (Todd) Meadows, and Sandy (Mark) Bryant, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at Downing & Lahey East Mortuary. Funeral Service will be at 10:00 am, Thursday, March 13, 2025, at Heartland Community Church. His legacy of honor, service, and dedication will live on in the countless lives he touched. Rest easy, Captain-your watch is over, but your legacy will stand the test of time.

Guestbook

  1. I was Capt. at station 37. I had the misfortune (pleasure) of working with Steve and Dan. They made station life fun. BUT, when it was time to work I didn’t have to worry. I would give them tasks and the were done; safely and thoroughly.

Family was Steve’s priority. Bonnie and the kids ( they were still in school) often came to visit.
Rest easy Steve. Thank you for teaching me.

  2. What a marvelous and beautiful tribute to Steve!! He sounds like he was type of person we all dream of becoming! God bless you, Diane and Timothy!

  3. Bonnie and kids. So sorry to hear of the loss of a great man. Not only knew you as neighbors, but as Girl Scout trainers.

My sympathies to Steve’s family, friends and loved ones.

  5.
