Thelma Guinty, 88, of Wichita, Kansas, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on January 22, 2023. She was born on August 28, 1934, in Kingman, Kansas, to Floyd and Sybil Spotts. The family moved to Wichita, Kansas, and lived in the Planeview neighborhood while her father worked at Boeing building B52 Bombers. Thelma attended Planeview High School where she graduated in 1952. While attending high school, she met Darrell Guinty. They were married in 1952. They celebrated 60 years of marriage. Darrell joined the Navy shortly after graduating from high school. Their first child, Ronald was born at McConnell Air Force Base. Thelma moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia, to join Darrell while he served on the USS Ticonderoga. Upon completion of their time in Virginia, they returned to Wichita. The family continued to grow when Kirby, Joi and Lu Anne were born. Thelma loved her children deeply and took pride in raising them and celebrating their accomplishments. During this time, Thelma and her high school friends started a social club that provided many lifelong friendships. Thelma loved her family deeply. Having her family near her during the holiday season was always the highlight of every year. The Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations are legendary. She was an awesome cook, and many great memories were made during these times. Thelma also took pride and joy in her 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Thelma began working at the Wichita Clinic in 1966. She started her career there as a Lab and Xray scheduler. During her time at the clinic, her dedication and outstanding organizational skills earned her several promotions. Thelma spent her last few years as the Director of Facilities during a time of rapid growth at the Clinic. In addition to her parents, Thelma was proceeded in death by her husband Darrell: infant sister, Bonnie: brother, Eugene (Bud); and sister Margaret. She is survived by sister, Claudine, brother Larry, sister, Kathy; sons, Ron and Kirby; and daughters, Joi and Lu Anne. The viewing will take place on Saturday the 28th of January from 9 AM until 10 AM at the Downing & Lahey Mortuary West, 10515 W. Maple, Wichita, KS. The memorial service will begin at 10 AM. The Graveside service will take place at 12:30 PM in Kingman, Kansas, at the Walnut Hill Cemetery.   1. Aunt Thelma will be very missed. She made the most amazing chicken salad. She always made sure to have her candy dishes full when us kids would visit and even when we was adults. The holidays easter Thanksgiving and Christmas was always so much fun and exciting. The BBQ in the summers for birthday or just a simple get together was always so much fun. Playing games in there amazing backyard. They took amazing pride in there yard and home. Love and miss you… Love Mike and Darcy Smith (Niece)

  2. Living on the West Coast, I was only able to spend time with Aunt Thelma a few times as an adult, most recently at her 88th birthday celebration! She brought me a lot of smiles with her quick wit and no nonsense approach to life! RIP Auntie…you’ll definitely be missed!
