Saffell, Dr. Thomas Fletcher, was born November 5, 1925 and passed away November 16, 2011. The family will have a graveside ceremony at 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 21 at Lynn Creek Cemetery in Berryton KS. A Memorial Service will be held in Garden City, KS at a later date. Thomas was born in Overbrook, KS, and spent his childhood in nearby Berryton, KS. He was the son of Hazel (Turner) and Fletcher Saffell. His long association with The University of Kansas included playing baseball, and receiving BA, MA and EdD degrees. After pitching for KU, he played semi-pro baseball. His career in education involved being a teacher, coach, principal, superintendent, college professor, and college president in Colorado and Kansas. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf. Ruth (Green) Saffell and Tom met in high school and were married for 65 years. Tom is survived by Ruth, of the home; children, Susan (Robert) Mayo of Wichita, twins, Linda (Dennis) Kraus of Dallas, TX and Dr. Thomas (Jacque) Saffell, of Abilene, KS Cindy (John) Lightner of Garden City and Kirk (Kelli) Saffell of San Antonio, TX. In addition, he leaves behind a sister, Betty (Saffell) Underwood of Berryton, KS; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Thomas F. Saffell Scholarship Fund, c/o Garden City Community College, 801 Campus Drive, Garden City, KS, 67846. Downing Lahey Mortuary East. A Memorial Service will be held in Garden City, KS at a later date.

  1. My thoughts and prayers to Ruth and family. Dr. Saffell made many significant contributions to education in Kansas. I will always remember him for the time he spent at GCCC and the progress the college made under his direction.—Marla Lord, GCCC print shop/student publications 1972 – 2001.
