Timothy (Tim) Schoonover, son of Everett and Reva (Scott) Schoonover was truly one of a kind, an artist and lover of life, he went to a wonderful new home on November 8, 2022, after a courageous battle with renal and heart disease. He was born on January 3, 1947, in Kansas City, Missouri and was placed into the loving arms of his parents Everett and Reva. His childhood and youth were on the family farm in rural Ulysses, Kansas where his early childhood education was at a one room schoolhouse. When that school was closed, he went on to attend the schools in Ulysses and graduated from Ulysses High School in 1966. Under the guidance of his art teacher, Judy Scott, his lifelong passion for art began. Tim continued to pursue his art education at Dodge City Community College and graduated from there in 1966. During his time at Dodge City Community College, he met Alice (Legleiter) while on an Art Class trip to Taos, New Mexico. Tim and Alice were married on August 19, 1967 and continued their education with a degree in Art and Art Education in 1970. Returning to Dodge City in 1970, he began his career as an Art teacher at Dodge City Junior High School. He loved his students and teaching. A turning point in his career came when he was asked by the superintendent to start an Art Photography program as part of the curriculum. He embraced that idea and wrote the curriculum for the class, which started at the freshman level. Known by his students as “Schoon” the class was unique and successful and soon expanded to a full time four year program at Dodge City Senior High School. Tim was always invested in his students and their success. In 1991 he received the Kansas Art Educator Award.Tim was part of a group of western Kansas Art teachers who spearheaded the founding of the Western Kansas Scholastic Art Awards a part of the National Scholastic Art Awards. During his teaching career he loved that many of his students won either State or National Scholastic Art Awards in Photography. After a life-altering illness he retired from teaching in 2001. He continued to explore different art media throughout his life. He was known for his photography and his photographic collages.Exploring the United States and Canada was an adventure that he cherished. He was happy to be on the go and would tell people, “Alice plans the trip and I pack my bag and get in the car.” He loved to visit Taos, New Mexico and Yellowstone National Park. Visits to family in Wisconsin were part of his cherished memories. He loved to read, listen to music, go to concerts, plays, and music theater. Tim was an active member of the community, and he enjoyed working as member of the Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas scholarship committee and being on the board of the Depot Theater Company before he moved from Dodge City. Throughout his life he loved and was loved by his doggies, Vincent, Valentine, Daisy, Maxee, Meggie, Scout Lee, Jemma Lee, Siddalee, Abby Gale, and is survived by his beloved gift from God, Bella Boo.He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Everett and Reva Schoonover, and brother, Jeff Schoonover. 8. This man profoundly shaped my life. He made me rethink how I look at the world. And, most importantly, he believed in me at a time when I needed it most.

“Anyone can take a photo. To be a great is to show others how you see the world.”

    RIP Schoon.

  9. I have so many wonderful memories and momentos gathered through the years!
Tim and Alice bought for me, my very first journal many years ago which started my journaling journey! Oh, that infectious laugh of his! He was my only reason for attending school at times. I was so blessed to have an art teacher who also became one of my dearest friends. Just recently Tim sent me a hand written letter with step by step instructions on how to work with pastels and we also did an art doll exchange! (Photo of his creation). Schoon has had a tremendous impact not only in my art, but in my life. Forever in my heart. I love he and Alice so much!

  10. When I was a new teacher at Dodge City High School, Schoonover and I had the same lunch. He was always there with advice, tidbits, and cautions whenever I needed them. I really appreciated having someone to talk to.

  11. A beautiful obituary, Alice. I didn’t know some of these things, or else I had forgotten. You know how devastated we are!! Thank heavens we visited for the week when we did! Tim was a trooper doing the house tour, going out to eat, hours of visiting. We will miss our traveling buddy immensely. I have it marked on red on next years calendar for his memorial service. Love from Dave & BJ to you and Bella Boo!!

  12. Tim was the most philosophical child. Many memories of our family car trips to Red River, New Mexico. Once he sprained his ankle and we sat on a rock waiting among the pine trees. Tim looked at the sky and said, “How would God be able to find us among all of these trees?” He loved his students and believed in Art; realizing how hard an art life was. When our Mom, Agnes Schoonover, died young; he approached me after the funeral and said through his tears, “She lived a good life.”

    Tim lived a good Life.

  13. This man became a father figure to me and guided me into becoming a freelance photographer. He was a great teacher and a lifelong friend. My life would not have developed in the good way that it has without Tim and Alice to guide me when I needed guidance at a very difficult time in my life. I will miss you forever and will wait patiently until we meet again.

    • Hugs to you Damon, and your family. I know how special Tim was to you all!! We will see you next summer at Tim’s celebration of life. XOXO-BJ and Dave

  14. Alice I am so sorry for your loss. A truly wonderful person who loved you very much. May God hold him in his hand. Glenda Arellano

  15. We knew Tim from the time he and Alice came into our first shop of Reel Memories. We had great times! We loved Tim and enjoyed when we visited his school in Dodge City. Sorry, we didn’t know they had moved to Wichita and Tim had health issues. He was wonderful to be around! Can still hear his laugh! We enjoyed dogs, movies, art and more together. God bless!
