Virginia R. Hafer Lifelong Wichita resident, passed away Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at the age of 97. Virginia was born February 27, 1920 to Tom and Myrtle Chitwood and grew up in Riverside, graduating from North High. She had one brother, H. Delmar Chitwood, who preceded her in death. As a young woman she visited California on vacation with her family where her father ordered her a new pair of designer slacks made. When she returned she became one of three or four fashionable young women in Wichita who started the trend of women wearing slacks at public functions. She married, on November 15, 1941, Frank W. Hafer (1917-2007), hotelier and youngest son of Wichita Builder, Frances M. Hafer. Virginia and Frank had one daughter, Rebecca L. Knouse of Coldwater, MS; two step-granddaughters; 6 great-granddaughters; and 3 great-great-grandsons. Virginia made lifelong friends beginning at the age of 8. She was a member of Lambda Tau Delta Sorority. Together with her husband, she was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church for several decades. She was an avid bridge player, liked to watch tennis as well as WSU and KU basketball on television. She read the Wichita Eagle from front to back each day. She was a loving and faithful wife, and all the mom a girl could ask for. She never gave up! She just kept living her life with a smile no matter what it threw at her. No Services will be held. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choosing. Downing & Lahey East Mortuary.
