Christy, Christine Eleanor, known lovingly as “Aunt Chrissie” to her three nephews and as “Chris” to her many friends, passed away on January 8 at Wesley Hospital in Wichita. At her bedside was her long-time companion, Carolyn Trinkle. Christine was born in Eureka, Kansas, daughter of Wm. Glen Christy and Christine Fritzlen Christy. She was educated in Wichita, graduating from East High School in 1944. She received a BS degree in mathematics from Wichita State University and a Masters Degree from the University of Hawaii after writing a book on “New Math”. She later taught math classes at the Middle School in Carmel, California. She always strived to give her students a good foundation so they would be accepted at the most prestigious universities. After many years of teaching, she decided to make traveling a profession by organizing groups of friends with similar interests. She moved to Lake Tahoe and built a charming house known as “Chrissies A-Frame” where her sister, Jane, and family spent many happy ski weekends. After years of travel, living in Porterville, CA, San Diego and Hawaii, she returned to Wichita and her cruise tours became very successful. Christine was a vivacious, charming and popular member of many organizations. She was a member of the Junior League of Wichita, Sorosis Sorority at Wichita State University and the Episcopal Church as well as many other groups interested in art, music, backgammon and bridge. She is survived by her sister, Jane Christy Purnell, and Janes husband, Charles Purnell, of Palo Alto, CA.; their three sons, Charles Christy Purnell of Lakeland, FL, Bradley Mills Purnell of Acampo, CA and Whitney George Purnell of Redwood City, CA; and her cousins, Robert Christy, Jr. and Marjorie Christy Bauch of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Funeral arrangements have been made by Downing Lahey Mortuary East. A memorial service will be held in the Chapel at Larksfield, 7373 E. 29th N., in Wichita on January 14th at 1 PM. Friends are invited. The family particularly wants to thank Mr. Dale Friedman of Emprise Bank for his care and support during Christines lengthy illness. Donations in Christines memory may be made to the “Sunflower Lane” at Larksfield, 7373 E. 29th N., Wichita, KS 67226.
