Miriam "Mim" (Oakleaf) Jones, 74, passed away Tuesday, August 9, 2016. Memorial Service will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 13, at First United Methodist Church. A graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. at Mound Valley Cemetery in Mound Valley, Kansas. Mim was born December 28, 1941, in Oswego, Kansas, and grew up on the family farm southeast of Mound Valley. She graduated from Labette County High School in 1959. One of the things she was most proud of was the fact that she was only the second female to be hired by Southwestern Bell Corporation as an Outside Technician (climbing poles). She worked for them from November 1973 until April of 2004. Mim was active in Democratic Politics in Kansas and was often invited to the presidential inaugural balls in Washington, D.C. At the age of 62, she graduated from Longview College in Lees Summit, Missouri, with an Associates Degree in political science. Mim was preceded in death by her parents, Sara and Marcus Oakleaf; sisters, Patricia Libby and Janice Lutz, and brother, Byron Oakleaf. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Lackey (Mark) of Fleetwood, PA; sons, Herman William “Bill” Fiechtl of Charleston, SC, David Alan Fiechtl of Fleetwood, PA; grandchildren, Jonas Lackey, Breanne Fiechtl, Shannon Lackey, Brittany Fiechtl, Asa Lackey, and niece, Sara Oakleaf-Wilson. A memorial has been established with YWCA Womens Crisis Center, 1111 N. St. Francis, Wichita, KS 67214. Downing & Lahey Mortuary West.
