McDowell, Martha L., 80, passed away Monday, August 16, 2010. Rosary will be at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, August 19 at Downing Lahey Mortuary East. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 20 at Church of the Magdalen. Martha graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse and also from Wichita State University with a BSN. She received certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner from the American Nurses Association. Martha worked as a registered nurse for 40 years. Preceded in death by parents, Russell and Mary (Spear) Scrivner. Survivors: husband, David; sons, David Jr. of Salina, KS, Thomas of Andover, KS, Michael of Shaker Heights, OH and Russell of Austin, TX; daughters, Nancy Berg of Austin, TX and Catherine Hudson of Olathe, KS; sister, Dorothy Singleton of Wichita; 4 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild. A memorial has been established with the Alzheimers Research Center, 640 Jackson St., St. Paul, MN, 55101. Rosary will be at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, August 19 at Downing Lahey Mortuary East.

  1. To Mike and the McDowell family: Take great comfort that your mother left this world better than it was when she came into it. Take comfort firm in the knowledge that she raised a great family, a family whose members, in turn, have also made the world a better place, making those them full of joy. Her laughter now sings through your voice, her eyes see through yours, and her heart is now your own. Carry her torch, passing her wonderful light to each and everyone you meet, through everyone you meet, helping her to live on forever. Knowing you, Mike, I feel in a distant way that I know you mother. And if she was even just half of what you are, I know she was a great lady. We are with you in your time of grief.
