Jerry J. Coppel

Coppel, Jerry Joseph, 79, passed away Wednesday, August 18, 2010. Rosary, 7 p.m., Sunday, August 22; Funeral Mass, 10 a.m., Monday, August 23, both at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. Jerry was born December 15, 1930 in Zweibrcken, Germany. His family immigrated to the United States in July 1936. Jerry spent most of his growing-up years in Denver, CO and graduated from Denver University with a Masters Degree in social work. Prior to graduation he worked as a caseworker with the Denver Department of Public Welfare. Upon graduation, he went to work for the Wisconsin State Welfare Department, later becoming the District Administrator for the Division of Children and Youth. In 1969, he went to work as a consultant for the Child Welfare League of America in New York City. In 1975, he moved to Wichita, KS and served as the Director of the Kansas Childrens Service League for 12 years. He retired in April 2000 after working in Child Protective Services for the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services (SRS). Preceded in death by parents, Frederick and Lissy (Brck) Coppel and daughter, Lisa. Survivors: wife, Maxine; son, Joe Coppel (Kellye) of Wichita; daughters, Mary Onstott of Wichita and Emmy Coppel of Ventura, CA; brother, Claude Coppel (Lynn) of Fullerton, CA; grandchildren, Amanda, Lance, Shea, Courtney, Alli, Jake and Max; great-grandchildren, Asher and Micah. Memorial established with St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 645 N. 119th St. W., Wichita, KS 67235. Downing Lahey Mortuary West.

To the Coppel family: I used to work with Jerry at SRS and remember him being a very intelligent and humorous person. He left us with some wonderful memories and will be greatly missed.
