Robert Leonard Bob Vara

Vara, Robert Leonard, age 83, beloved father, joined his loving wife Marlys in Heaven on August 22, 2014. Robert was born in Buffalo, New York on November 21, 1930 to Antonio and Vincenza Vara. As a young man Robert was a nightclub singer in New York. He later served in the United States Navy. Robert was a successful businessman, managing various department stores throughout the United States and Puerto Rico, including the Gem store in Wichita. He later became a successful entrepreneur, owning his own business, VIP Sales and Service, in Overland Park, Kansas. He retired to Las Vegas where he and his wife, Marlys enjoyed the many shows and entertainment venues. While living in Las Vegas, Robert was cast as an extra in the movie “Oceans Eleven,” of which he was very proud. One never to rest, Robert began working for Bell Limousine Service, where he enjoyed the company of many famous people and celebrities. Robert and his wife returned to Wichita to be near his two daughters, Anita and Gina. Robert was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and also loved music. Robert is preceded in death by his son, Robert (Bobby); his wife Marlys; his brothers, Tony and Al; sister, Ida; and his parents, Vincenza (Jenny) and Antonio (Tony) Vara. Robert is survived by his daughters, Anita Oberwortmann of Wichita, KS, Gina Dolieslager of Conway Springs, KS, Elizabeth Hughes of Racine, WI; and son, Francis (Frank) of Union Grove, Wisconsin; Richard “Dick” Vara of San Diego, CA; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday August 27, 2014 at St. Elizabeth Chapel Catholic Care Center, Bel Aire KS 67220. The family suggests memorials to the Kansas Humane Society, 3313 N. Hillside St., Wichita, KS 67220. Downing Lahey East Mortuary.
