Elizabeth Nusbaum Sheffield, 99, died Wed., Dec. 7, 2016. An interment service will be held Saturday, June 24, at 11:00 am at Wichita Park Cemetery, 2500 N. Hillside. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Sheffield, and twin brother, Wellman Nusbaum; and is survived by her daughter and granddaughter, Jane and Elizabeth Sheffield, of New York, NY, and niece and nephew, Karen Nusbaum and Gary (and wife Alice) Nusbaum, of Leawood, KS. Born in Centropolis, KS, she graduated from the University of Kansas, and in 1944 married John at Ft. Bliss in El Paso, TX. They moved to Panama, where John was stationed with the US Army during WWII. Elizabeth taught health education at Wichita High School East until she became a mother. She was keenly aware of the needs and rights of the poor, and always quietly defended them. She loved books, the movies, pre-Colombian art, travel, bridge, walking, and golf, and worked as a volunteer with several Wichita organizations, including Venture House, an Episcopal social services agency where she did intake interviews, the Girl Scouts as a troop leader and the Wichita Art Association. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, where she taught Sunday school. A memorial service will be held in the spring.
