Armstrong, Genevieve “Jenny”, 92, publicity supervisor, passed away Friday, January 30, 2009. Graveside service, 1:00 P.M., Friday, February 6, Crown Hill Cemetery, Wheat Ridge, CO. Survivors include sister-in-law, Marie Andersen of Wichita and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents, Marcus and Johanna (Fahseler) Andersen, first husband, Robert Mitchell, second husband, Abner Armstrong, brothers, Marcus “Mike” Andersen, LaVerne “Andy” Andersen, and sister, Gwendolyn “Gwen” Richardson. Jenny was born December 14, 1916 in Filley, NE and baptized at an early age in the Methodist church. She graduated from Filley High School in 1934 after which her family moved to a farm in the Blue Springs area. In December of 1936, she went to Colorado where she met and married Robert Mitchell on August 14, 1937. After working as a waitress and cook for 9 years in the Denver area, in 1949 she found a job as Publicity Supervisor for the Federal Postal Employees Association (FPEA) where she worked until her retirement un 1975. During that time, she bowled on the company team for 9 years. Jenny and Bob enjoyed camping and fishing in the mountains of Colorado and enjoyed dancing to the bands of the “Big Band Era” in the Trocadero Ballroom at Elitch Gardens in Denver. Robert passed away on November 10, 1974 in Denver. Three years later on November 15, 1977, she married Abner “Ab” Armstrong of Filley, Nebraska where they continued to reside. Jenny and Ab enjoyed their 15 years together, dancing, traveling and spending their winters in Arizona. Ab passed away on May 3, 1992. Jenny lived in Filley until March of 2002, then moved into the Homestead House in Beatrice and later to the Hickman Manor in Hickman. After a fall in June of 2008, she moved to the Kansas Masonic Home in Wichita where she resided until her death. Jenny was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star, a member of the United Methodist Church, the Virginia American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary in Beatrice. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established with the Kansas Masonic Home Good Deeds Fund, 401 S. Seneca, Wichita, KS 67213. Downing Lahey Mortuary West.

  1. We wanted to extend our sympathy to Jenny’s family. She was such a sweet lady. I got to know her through the Virginia Legion and Auxiliary. We served many a function together and always had a good time doing so. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.
