Margaretta S. “Woggie” (nee S deKiss
April 5, 1923 ~ May 10, 2008
deKiss, Margaretta S. “Woggie” (nee Stewart), 85, died in her sleep at St. Josephs Hospital, Saturday morning, May 10, 2008. Service 11:00 A.M., Thursday, May 22, St. Stephens Episcopal Church. Woggie was born April 5, 1923, the granddaughter of a founder (Henry F. Smith) of Wellington, KS. She became a 3rd generation alum of The University of Kansas. Following the war, she settled in Wichita with her first husband, the late William R. Jones, Sr. with their three baby-boomers. In 1957, she moved to Mexico City to pursue graduate studies in Spanish literature, where she met her second husband, the late George deKiss. Together they launched a 30 year globe-trotting career in the international hotel and travel business. Following a stint as owner/inn-keepers of Quinta los Besos in Oaxaca, Mexico, they retired to Wellington in the mid-1980s. Woggie continued to work as a consultant to major travel developments throughout Latin American. She also volunteered with Venture House (Episcopal Social Services) of Wichita, providing ESL classes for migrant workers and tutoring in resume-building and business prospectus-development for individuals in need. As diabetes increasingly constricted her life, Woggie moved to Wichita to be near her family, who survive her, Grier and Janie Jones and William R. and Jane Jones, daughter, Sally Jones of Washington, D.C. and their children and grandchildren. With their support and that of her fellow parishioners of St. Stevens Church, she maintained her dedication to human service with Venture House well beyond the limits of her condition. She was an indomitable spirit of that “Greatest Generation.” Should friends want to express their sympathy, the family requests that donations be made to Venture House Episcopal Social Services, 1005 E. 2nd, Wichita, KS, 67214 or the American Diabetes Association, 837 South Hillside, Wichita, KS, 67211.
