Frederick Fred Vandegrift

Frederick Vandegrift born on September 20, 1928, in Pittsburg, Kansas died on August 28, 2016. Rosary will be at 2:00 pm at Downing & Lahey Mortuary East with a Celebration of Life at 3:00 pm, both on Friday, September 2, 2016, at La Galette Caf & Bakery. Fred Joined the Navy at 17 serving his country from 1945 1947. Upon returning from the Navy, Fred attended the University of Nebraska where he worked part time for the Grand Island Independent. This launched his career as a fourth generation newsman. In 1952, Fred accepted a position with the Salina Journal in the advertising department where he worked on the business side. In 1956 he was appointed to the papers board of directors. From there he worked his way up to Publisher and President. Upon his retirement in 1985, Fred continued his consulting responsibilities with the Harris Group of eleven newspapers and 16 radio stations across the United States. At that time, Fred also purchased Consolidated Printing and Stationary Company, in Salina Kansas. He remained a part of the company until his death. Fred was married to Cathy in 1986. They lived, loved and enjoyed 30 years of marriage together. Fred and Cathy combined have five children; Mary Deb Hedges (Tony), Frederick Vandegrift (deceased), Don Vandegrift (Robin), Jessica Clarke, Lacy Jobe (Kelly). Fred has nine grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Clara; sisters, Virginia and Mary Catherine, and his son Fred. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations for a memorial in honor of Fred for a scholarship at Wichita State University, 1845 Fairmount, Wichita, Kansas 67260.
