Rowland, Lorena Joan, 78, retired Wichita police detective, passed away Saturday, May 21, 2011. The service will be 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 25 at Downing Lahey Mortuary West. Preceded in death by husband, Donald S. Rowland, sons, Steven Roy Rowland and Leslie Don Rowland. Survivors: son, Jason Wayne Rowland of Wichita; daughters, Rhonda Wenke-Spillman and Janet Rowland, both of Wichita; brother, Leland Morris of Alva, OK; sisters, Virginia Schwerdtfeger of Alva, OK and Mary Lou Shoemaker of Texas; 6 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren. A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S. market, Wichita, KS, 67202.

It was a great sadness that Joan Ann had passed away. I was told of her going into the hospital and what happened there. I pray that she is now with out pain and is welcomed into Gods Kingdom. Joan worked for me when i was in charge of the detective divison and found her to be a good dicated Cop. I never thought that women had any business being police officer but she was the one that changed my mind. She set a standard that would be hard for future women to be hired as a police officer. I worked with Joann until the time I retired. She was always a good worker, and had no complaints. She will be missed.
