Chat T. Nguyen, 96. AKA Mrs. Giam Phan, of Wichita Kansas, passed away peacefully on the morning of May 29, 2018. Mrs. Nguyen was born on May 12, 1922 in North Viet Nam. Right before the Geneva Convention of 1954, which divided Vietnam into two different governments, communism and republic of Vietnam, she immigrated to South Viet Nam to protect her freedom to be a practicing Catholic. Here, she married Giam V. Phan on September 13, 1948. At the early stage of the newly founded government in the South, she and her husband were struggling to adapt to the new culture. They found opportunities for success in Laos, the neighboring country, and moved their young family there. She ran a successful business in Laos; while raising 8 children. After the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975, the family immigrated to the United States as refugees. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Giam, and one son. She is survived by her daughter, Khai Phan of Fairfax, VA; daughter, Tuyet Ha of Waco, TX; son, Vu Phan of Garden Grove, CA; son, Hai Phan of Wichita, KS; daughter, Phuong Nguyen of Wichita, KS; daughter, Loan Phan of Houston, TX; daughter, Diep Nguyen of Arlington, TX; son, Thai Phan of Wichita, KS; and many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Nguyen was a woman of strong will and great faith. A Rosary will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 1 at Holy Savior Catholic Church, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Calvary Cemetery in Wichita.
