Thompson, Evelyn C., 90, died Sunday, March 1, 2009. Service 2:00 P.M., Friday, March 6, Hamilton United Methodist Church, Hamilton, KS. Evelyn was born August 5, 1918 to parents, Hattie V. (Halsted) and Cary E. Cummins near Burkett, Greenwood County, KS on the family farm. She married Harry E. Wakeman on January 3, 1943 in Mountain View, CA. Evelyn was a telephone operator for several years in Hamilton and El Dorado. During WWII and until 1949, she was a supervisor in the San Francisco Bay area telephone company. In 1949, Harry and Evelyn moved back to Kansas and started farming south of Hamilton. Harry passed away on December 28, 1962 in Kansas City, KS. Evelyn married George “Ray” Thompson on May 12, 1964 in Hamilton, KS. She made her home in Wichita since 1964. Ray passed away June 9, 1987 in Wichita. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Hamilton, Order of the Eastern Star and several other organizations in Wichita. Preceded in death by her parents, brother, Otis Cummins and sister, Louise. She is survived by nieces, Sherry Clymer of El Dorado, Karen (Jim) Arnel of Wichita, Linda Stuber of Eureka and Kathryn (Lynn) May of Maiden NC; nephew, Forest (Sandra) Smith of Arkansas City, KS; many great-nieces and nephews and sister-in-law, Maryellen Sampson of Wichita. Memorials have been established with Greenwood County Historical Society, 120 W. 4th, Eureka, KS, 67045-1445 and Hamilton United Methodist Church, 202 N. 2nd, Hamilton, KS, 66853.
