DVM Murray J. Dean

October 9, 1948 ~ October 15, 2018
Murray J. Dean, DVM, died peacefully at home Monday, October 15, 2018, surrounded by family and friends at age 70. Murray was born in Springfield, MO October 9, 1948 to Everett J. "John" and Anna L. Irvin Dean. He grew up in Wichita and was a proud Chaplain Kapaun Memorial High School graduate 1966; WSU graduate in microbiology in 1970 while a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity; K-State College of Veterinary Medicine, cum laude 1976. Murray and Deborah K. "Debby" DeArmond were married June 13, 1970 and the proud parents of 3 sons, Kevin M., Alan D., and Christopher J. (Emily), all of Wichita, and daughter, Maggie L. (Scott D.) Smith of Benton, KS. Murray loved his work as a veterinarian in Valley Center for 35 years and it showed by the way he treated all the pets he worked on. If he couldnt remember the clients name, he always knew the pets name off the top of his head. He felt a true friendship with his clients and many remembered him with cards and pictures of their pets, new and old, for the 5 years he was retired. His greatest joy was having the family together at the lake house as many weekends as possible; having fun with them boating, tubing, skiing, fishing, and eating great food. He was honored to be a member of the Knights of Columbus, Crusillo Mens Group, and being a 40-year member of St. Jude Catholic Church. His faith was of utmost importance to him. You would find him daily at evening Mass with his wife and making new friends. Murray was preceded in death by his parents and his half-brother, Dale E. Dean. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, all his children, and his precious grandchildren, Isaac M. and Anna R. Dean, Nora K. and Brady S. Smith; his half-sisters, Judy Clews of Phoenix, AZ, Merrily Havlic of Grandview, MO; along with many extended family members. We thank Dr. Phu V. Truong and all the wonderful, caring staff at Cancer Center of Kansas in Wichita for the excellent care given to Murray and family for almost 6 years. Rosary will be at 7:00 pm, Thursday, October 18; Funeral Mass at 10:30 am, Friday, October 19, both at St. Jude Catholic Church, 3030 N. Amidon, Wichita, KS 67204. Interment at Ascension Cemetery, Wichita. Memorials can be made to: St. Jude Church; St. Jude Knights of Columbus; or the Lords Diner, 520 N. Broadway, Wichita, KS 67214. Downing & Lahey East Mortuary.

Debby and family,
We are so sorry to hear of your loss. Murray gave it his all to fight the cancer, and that he did well. Debby, you were constantly there by his side through it all. I remember well the time you and I visited at the grocery store, and you told me of his illness (and his retirement). I was shocked to hear it.

We extend our deepest sympathy to his family and know they will miss him greatly.
