Nora Otilie Steg

Steg, Nora Ottilie, 91, beloved sister of Doris Steg and Mary Ann Mercer, passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2013. She was the daughter of Ehrhardt Reinhold (E.R.) and Ida Wanda Rauhut Steg, and was born in Barnes, Washington County, Kansas on November 5, 1921. When she was an infant her family moved to Emporia, Kansas, where she completed her schooling. Nora graduated from Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia, and later did graduate work at Kansas State University, Manhattan. After several teaching assignments, she started her career as a home service representative for Kansas Gas Electric Company, Wichita. She was promoted to Home Service Director and her responsibilities included coordinating, organizing, and giving general supervision to all home service activities of the company. During her tenure as Home Service Director she was nationally honored four times by the Laura McCall Awards for her service to home service women in the electric utility field for special achievement and public service during the year. Her programs were presented to hundreds of womens groups in Wichita, Newton, El Dorado, Arkansas City, Pittsburg, Independence and Fort Scott. Following her supervision in home service programs she subsequently was promoted to Manager of Marketing at Kansas Gas Electric Company. Because of her accomplishments she appeared in four issues of Whos Who in American Women. In addition to her two sisters she is survived by her brother-in-law, John L. Mercer; nephew, David Mercer; niece, Jane Mercer (Stewart) Whitham of Leoti, KS; sister-in-law, Barbara Mitchell Steg of Plainfield, IL; niece, Lise Steg Thorsby of Darien, IL; nephews, Eric Steg of Gainesville, FL, John Steg, M.D., of McLean, VA, Thomas Steg, DDS of Omaha, NE, James Steg, M.D. of Vienna, VA, and Robert Steg, M.D. of Omaha, NE. Nora was preceded in death by her siblings: Dr. Ilse Steg, Dr. Olaf Steg, Victor Steg, and Dr. Paul Steg. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at 10:30 A.M., at Reformation Lutheran Church, 7601 E. 13th St. N., Wichita, with Pastor Lowell Michelson and Pastor Kristin Neitzel officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Reformation Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery. Downing Lahey Mortuary East.
