Preceded in death by her husband, Michel “Mike” Sauerwein; parents, Johann and Barbara Lutz. Survived by her sons, Rudolf “Rudi” (Doris) Sauerwein, Frank (Beverly) Sauerwein, both of Wichita; grandchildren, Frank (Margarete) Sauerwein of Germany, Erika Sauerwein of Denver, CO, Daniel Sauerwein of Lawrence, KS, Leah (Hank) Krueger of Wichita, Michelle (Jarrett) Duncan of Denver, CO, Nadine (Matthew) Long of Wichita, Nicole Sauerwein, of Seattle, WA; great-grandchildren, Hannah and Greta Sauerwein of Germany, Addyson and Hudson Krueger, Evelyn and Caroline Long, all of Wichita; Kinley Duncan of Denver, CO; sister, Maria (Hermann) Schneider of Germany. Magdalena married Michel Sauerwein of Meurich, Germany on May 6, 1950 in Kirf, Germany. They celebrated 65 wonderful years together before his death. Magdalena and Mike immigrated to Kansas in 1954 with their two young sons. A seamstress by trade, Magdalena spent the early years in Kansas learning English, raising her boys and attending their school and sporting activities. The Sauerwein family self-built their first home in 1962. In 1977, Magdalena and Mike co-founded Sauerwein Construction Company. Magdalena worked as the company’s bookkeeper until she retired in the mid 1990s. A devout Catholic, Magdalena was an active member of All Saints Catholic Church and the German American Association. She took great pride in her yard, spending hours in the garden, tending to the vegetables and taking special care to her flowers. Magdalena also enjoyed knitting, most recently making baby blankets for all her great grandchildren. An avid cook and baker, Magdalena was the ultimate host. She loved planning meals and celebrations for her family and friends. Birthday gatherings were a particular favorite. The Sauerwein household was always filled with joy, happiness and something tasty. That was Magdalena – devoted, kind and generous – the loving rock to the Sauerwein family. Memorials have been established with: The Lord’s Diner, 520 N. Broadway, Wichita, KS 67214; Amedisys Hospice of Wichita, 250 W. Douglas #110, Wichita, KS 67202. My condolences to Frank & Rudi. I had the privilege of working with the Sauerwein company for over 40 years, first met Mike in 1967 while working on a job with him and over the years since and had the privilege of working with the entire family.
