He was on the ship that picked up Ham, the first chimp in space and he was responsible for his health and safety as the ship's medic. He married Wykeemah in 1960. Loyd worked various jobs while attending University earning his Master's in Education as well as Education Specialist (EdS) degrees from Pittsburg State University in 1987. He taught in Middle Schools and was principal in Cherokee, Kansas for many years. He was loved by the children for his quirky ties and fun-loving spirit. Later, he worked with prisoners at the Hutchinson Correction Facility teaching them GED and life skills. He was a member of Hillside Christian Church and served as Elder. His greatest joy was spending time with his family. He and Wykeemah traveled to many countries visiting Price. He spent many hours with his granddaughter, Sydney and they were two peas in a pod. He was a life-long Kansas City Chief's fan, and we are convinced that they are going to win the Super Bowl again this year for him. Preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Maudie Chumley. 1. Wykeemah I am deeply sorry to hear of Loyd’s passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family in this most difficult time. Jim Peebler

  2. Fair winds and following seas sailor. “Boatswain… Standby to pipe the side… Shipmate’s going Ashore…” Thank you Loyd for your service to this nation. U.S. Navy.

  3. Loyd was a dear friend and will be greatly missed. DQ and I shared many happy times with him and Wykeemah. He was my boss at Gas Elementary and if it had not been for him and Wykeemah, DQ and I would not have met and married. We extend our deepest sympathy to Wykeemah, Price, Tracey, Sydney, and Troy. May the Angels receive him and present him to God Most High. Dennis and Joyce Quick

  4. When I painted Loyd’s portrait he looks so serious and sombre, which is the look I was going for. He wasn’t at all though for my photoshoot, he was laughing and joking the whole time. I finally got the look I wanted when he dozed off to take a nap! He will be greatly missed. Simon

    • Thank you Simon, we love this picture so much. You captured how thoughtful he was. Thanks from Wykeemah, Price, Tracey, Troy and I
