Rick L. Engstrand

March 4, 1963 ~ February 22, 2022
Rick L. Engstrand, 58, passed away Tuesday, February 22, 2022. Rick’s love for the ocean and travel developed during his service in the Navy. He was a medic stationed in Jacksonville, FL on the USS Saratoga, which was deployed to the Mediterranean. Rick took advantage that year of every opportunity to explore Italy and Spain before being honorably discharged. Football was another passion, and the Raiders were his team. When Draft Day came around he was ready, having researched for days. Rick also had a great love for his family and not one person was spared his sarcastic humor. Survived by his loving girlfriend, Margaret “Maggie” Burnette; mother, Paula (John) McKenzie, both of Wichita; daughter, Shelby Brasfield of Kansas City, KS; brother, Greg (Martha) Engstrand of Cedar Grove, TN; aunts and uncle, nieces, and many cousins. A memorial has been established because of his love for animals great and small with: Tanganyika Wildlife Park, 1000 S. Hawkins Ln, Goddard KS 67052. Celebration of life at a later date. Services in care of Downing & Lahey Mortuary - East Chapel.
Rick, It has been great getting back in touch with you this past year. We had some great laughs and great memories in our days, Pizza (of course, Pizza Hut Pizza) and Star Trek, concerts, getting together before you shipped off to the Navy. I will miss you, you always could put a smile on my face. You will always be with me in my thoughts and in my heart. RIP my brother. Love you. To Maggie and family, my thoughts and prayers go out to you all. I pray for your strength and comfort that only God can provide during this time. Love to you all!
Rick, I am so very glad that we got to reconnect just a few months ago. Even though it has been decades since we use to hang out, it only seems like it was yesterday. I will always remember those times and was very excited to get to talk to you in these past months to catch up on the memories. You still sound the same as you did back those decades ago. As others I will miss talking to you, but will always remember you, especially all the trips we took in the Trans Am. My sincere condolences go out to Maggie as well as the rest of Rick’s family and friends in this very tough time. My thoughts are with all of you.
Fair winds and following seas sailor. “Boatswain… Standby to pipe the side… Shipmate’s going Ashore…” Thank you Rick for your service to this nation. U.S. Navy.
Rick was loving, caring, sharing, always willing to help. He never expected anything and always appreciated everything! He was a blessing everyday of his life and brightened ours by being in it! I am thankful for all the wonderful memories, they will become treasures to last a lifetime! Rest in peace Rick, you will always be so loved and missed every day! Aunt Linda
Rick, you were always so special to me. I will miss our phone chats, great talks and your loving ways. You had a way of making everything fun and interesting. I will miss your quick wit and great stories. Rest in peace. Love, Aunt Jan
Rick, I will miss the great times we had going to movies and playing video games. You were like a big brother to me. I will miss you. Rest in peace, Love, Brian.
It’s surreal to realize that Rick has passed. With his whacky sense of humor, and rapid-fire deceptions of events (politics, sports, people in general) it was always entertaining. And, if you didn’t get it the first time, he was sure to give it to you again. Rick was quietly soft hearted and made kind gestures he didn’t want noticed. I’ll miss the phone conversations we had, and the energy he brought when we were together. Rest in peace my nephew and friend, you’re going to be missed. Kip Wilson
I was so sad when I heard about Rick’s passing. He came to Southside when were Jr’s & graduated with us. You couldn’t know Rick & not love him! Even though I’ve not seen him in several yrs, I’ll always remember him, his smile & his funny oersonality. My prayers are with you all. Becky (Blanks) WTkins
