Florence Delight Viele Kirkland, 95, left this world on March 27, 2022. She’s now walking with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was born September 19, 1926 to John B. Longenecker and Elizabeth Longanecker. Her early days were on the farm. After she graduated from Chapman High School, she graduated from Wesley Hospital’s School of Nursing in Wichita, KS. She later graduated from Wesley’s School for Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), and worked as the Director of the school for several years. She later worked in West Plains, Missouri Hospital. She met Hugh Viele while she was in nursing school and they were married. They had two children, Duane and Dorene. She found time to be a Cub Scout Den mother and Girl Scout leader. Also, she was a very avid quilter and made hundreds of them. Most Blue Ribbon! Hugh passed away and she later married Kenneth B. “Burl” Kirkland. They then moved to his farm near Caulfield, MO. Later, Burl passed away and she moved back to Wichita, KS. She is survived by her Duane (Shauna) Viele, Abby (James) Viele-Assmann, Audrey (fiancé, Dylan Nobert) Viele, Dorene (Raymond) Stroot, Mindy (John) Cashion, Zachary, Dylan, Mallory, Jason (Angela) Stroot, Connor, Addison, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 6:00 – 8:00 pm, Thursday, March 31, 2022 at Downing & Lahey East Mortuary. Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am, Friday, April 1, 2022, at Derby Church of Christ. Memorials have been established with: American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 7023, Merrifield, VA 22116; American Kidney Fund, 11921 Rockville Pike, Ste. 300, Rockville, MD 20852.

    • Thank you Trudy. We as a family are so blessed to have many wonderful memories and her treasure trove of quilts. She left us quite a legacy!

  2. I never knew Florence Delight Viele Kirkland but I think I would have liked to. I am a 1972 graduate of Wesley School of Nursing. It was a wonderful school and Wesley Medical Center was great also

    • Thank you Dana. She was a special lady for sure. When the Wesley School of Nursing Alumni still had their class reunions, it was an honor and privilege to get to attend with her as both her daughter in law and a WSN graduate myself.
