Karen LeMay, 84, wife, mother, grandmother, and all-around wonderful woman, died Monday, May 15, 2023. Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at Downey & Lahey East Mortuary. Karen had an incredible zest for life and was sharp, quick witted, fun, and fiercely loyal. She was a staunch supporter for the underdog and would drop everything to help those in need. She was a gifted artist and loved taking classes at the Center of the Arts with her friends. She created beautiful sculptures and pottery. She was especially gifted at painting portraits of people, and could capture likenesses as well as Rembrandt. (She may not have thought this, but we do.) Many of her paintings have blue ribbons attached to them from the local art competitions where she would show her artwork. She also taught classes on the art of macrame back in the 70s when it was popular home décor. More than anything, Karen loved her family. She was a doting wife, mother and grandmother, and prioritized bringing everyone together multiple times a year. Her mantra was, “Come early, stay late.” She was goofy and she loved to laugh, making our family gatherings a “hoot.” Her house was the hub of activity throughout our lives. She was an integral part of her grandkids upbringing as they spent time with her almost weekly growing up. They loved being with her because she would play any and all games with them for as long as they wanted. And she gave them more candy than she ever gave her kids. Mostly, though, she showered them with the love and affection all kids need in their formative years. Karen’s entire family is grateful for the legacy of love and joy she has embedded in who we are. Preceded in death by her parents, James and Helen Lee. Survived by her husband, Roger LeMay; son, Mark Small of Wichita, KS; daughter, Linda Small of Valley Center, KS; son, Steven Small of Alta, UT; son, Mike Small of Wichita, KS; daughter, Kristin Peck (Jon) of Edmond, OK; son, Daniel Small of Wichita, KS; stepson, Brian LeMay of Leon, KS; stepson, Troy Lemay of Winfield, KS; 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. A memorial has been established with Mark Arts, 1307 N. Rock Rd., Wichita, KS, 67206.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Knowing Karen’s love of owls, the small mention of her family gatherings being “a hoot” really brought a smile to my face. Anytime I would see an owl while out and about in town, I would tag her in a pic of it on Facebook to let her know I was thinking about her. She and I both got lots of enjoyment out of it. She will be greatly missed. Now Linda and Kristy will get those owl mentions from me. They love owls too!

  2. To Roger LeMay and family, Sympathies from David and Marilyn Grisham. We have good memories from years gone by of Roger, Karen and her art.
