Doris June (Crouse) Shields

Doris June (Crouse) Shields, 94, born June 24, 1929, in Hiwasse, AR, went to her heavenly home on Thursday, December 7, 2023, surrounded by her loving family.
Doris grew up on a farm in Hiwasse, Arkansas, where she attended High Top School. She married Richard E. Shields (Dick) on December 12, 1946, in Benton County, Arkansas. Having nearly 60 years of marriage, they had (2) children born in Arkansas, son Dorvan and daughter Doris. In 1952 Doris and Dick moved to Wichita, Kansas, where they made their home and had another son, Terry. They built a home in Meca Akers on the eastside of Wichita next to sister and brother in-law, the McKinley's. They then moved into an apartment on Pinecrest, and later moved to 1813 S. StPaul, where they added a bedroom and family room to the home and lived for over fifty years and raised their family. They found their dream home at 119 S. Pine Grove, where she and Dick, enjoyed having plenty of room for family gatherings and Christmas. She enjoyed working in the cafeteria at Wichita South High School, where her two oldest attended school. She was a retiree from Cessna Aircraft, and also a member of the Cessna Outing Club. After retiring she and Dick enjoyed going to the lakes with their friends, Red and Nellie. Camping and fishing with friends and family. Traveling with family to Nashville, they were there at the same time Elvis Presley died in 1977. They would stay in their motorhome in Arkansas, working on the Shields family farm they bought in Gravette, Arkansas. She enjoyed spending time with her family, grandkids and great grandkids, cooking, sewing and making quilts for all her children, and grandchildren. She was a member of Asbury Church, and spent many years working on the bulletin crew for Sunday services. After her husband passed in 2006, she continued to live at their home at 119 S Pine Grove, keeping a small garden spot, enjoying canning and making lye soap. During the Christmas season she would make candy, with peanut brittle being her favorite, making plenty to share with family and friends. She also enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles spending hours doing so until she was unable due to her eye site. After the sale of their home in March 2021 on Pine Grove, she moved to Avita Senior Living, then in Oct 2021 moving to Presbyterian Manor in the skilled nursing area. She enjoyed her visits with family, friends and the people from Asbury Church. Also playing bingo, and listening to audio books.Preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Richard Elmer Shields; parents, Charley Wilford Crouse and Marie M. (Shell) Crouse; sisters, Francis McCully, Fay Maxine Bushouse, Norma Lee Fisher, Meta Lucy Mae Crouse, Kathern Louise Mowan, Helen Lorene Randal, Barbara Dee Heckert; and brother, Wilford Leon Crouse.
Doris is survived by sisters, Jennie Nell Knox and JoElla Crouse; children, Dorvan Richard and Cheryl Rae (Warner) Shields, Doris Sherlyn (Shields) and Larry Brookman, and Terry Lee and Cinda Lynn (Ludlow) Shields; grandchildren, Tera Lynn (Shields) and Brian Christopher DeGraeve of Mustang, OK; Christopher Lee and Ginny Elizabeth (Knowles) Shields of Valley Center, KS, Lacey Dianne (Shields) and Benjamin Lynn Berry of Oklahoma City, OK, and Tyler Richard and Hillary Elisabeth (Wall) Shields of Harrah, OK; great grandchildren, Emmalyn Grace Shields, Barret Taylor Shields, Nell Elizabeth Shields, Easton Gray Shields, Piper Noel Berry, Nora Belle Berry and Jack Ayden Shields.
Visitation will be 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Monday, December 11, 2023, at Downing & Lahey West Mortuary; Funeral Service will be 10:30 am, Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at Asbury Church. A memorial has been established with: Asbury Church, 2801 West 15th Street North, Wichita, KS 67203.
