Evelyn Maxine "Max" Spangenberg

Evelyn Maxine Spangenberg, known to all as Max, died peacefully on June 3, 2024 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was 91 years old. She had spent many years suffering from dementia and is finally at peace. Max was born in Stafford, Kansas on April 8, 1933 to parents Earl and Lucile Sillin.Max grew up in Hudson, Kansas where she went to school with Ronald Spangenberg. They began dating in 1950. After Max graduated in 1951, she attended Hutchinson Junior College. In 1953, Max transferred to Kansas State University where Ron was also attending. Ron and Max were married over Thanksgiving break on November 22, 1953 in Hudson. They were happily married for 70 years.Max graduated from Kansas State in 1955 with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. Upon graduation, Max began teaching grade school in Junction City, Salina, and ended in Wichita, Kansas. She loved being a teacher and helping educate all the children. Max was always passionate about helping others.In 1970, Max retired from teaching when she and Ron adopted their first child, Heather. In 1974, they adopted their second daughter, Nissa. From that point, Max put her heart and soul into raising their daughters and making her family her number one priority. Through the years, Max enjoyed supporting all of Heather and Nissa’s activities and Ron’s career in architecture. In 2001, Max was blessed with her first of 5 grandchildren, each of whom she loved and adored. They lovingly called her Meme. Max also treasured her time with all her extended family. She was a wonderful aunt, niece, sister, daughter, and cousin to many. Relationships were extremely important to her. Max also was a true friend to many people. If you knew Max, you knew the full extent of her loyalty and love.Max had a strong faith in her Lord and Savior. Max and Ron were active members of Grace Presbyterian Church in Wichita, Kansas. It was important to Max to raise her daughters in the Christian faith and to help teach them about Jesus Christ. The family formed many lasting relationships through their time at Grace Church. Traveling was something Max and Ron thoroughly enjoyed. They took many memorable vacations with their daughters as they grew up. When the grandchildren were born, Max and Ron wanted to share their love of traveling with their grandkids as well. All five kids treasured traveling with their Meme and Papa. Max was survived by her husband, Ron; her daughter, Heather Fisher and son-in-law, Bill Fisher; her daughter and husband, Nissa and Brian Smith; and her five grandchildren, Jordan Smith, Brecken Fisher, Taylor Smith, Audrey Smith, and Ellison Fisher. A Celebration of Life honoring Max Spangenberg is scheduled for Wednesday, June 12, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Grace Presbyterian Church, 5002 E. Douglas, Wichita, KS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wichita Children’s Home, 7271 E. 37th St. N., Wichita, KS 67226; and The Alzheimer's Association, 535 W.
