Michael "Mike" G. Goebel

Michael G. Goebel, 82, retired Star Lumber Vice President, died on July 23, 2026.

Mike is survived by his wife of 62 years, Linda M.; children, Michele Vecchia (Skip), Kathleen Robben (Paul), Patrick Goebel (Paulette), Victoria Callen (Tom), Jessica Kivett (Ryan) and beloved Golden Doodle, Zoe; brother, Robert Goebel; grandchildren, Alexandra Burns (Vincent), Emily Tibor (Zander), Anthony Vecchia, Amanda Burnett (Chris), Nicole Callanan (Chris), Jaidyn Shearon (John), Neil Goebel, Evan Goebel, Rebecca Callen, Sarah Callen, Caleb Kivett,  Michaela Kivett, Isaac Kivett, Milo Kivett; great-grandchildren, James Burns, Mila Burns, Holly Tibor, Oliver Gibson, Violet Rogers, Veronica Shearon. He is preceded in death by parents, Earl J. & Mathilda Goebel; sister, Sr. Betty Jean Goebel, OP, brother, William Goebel, sister, Mary Ann Cravens and two sisters-in-law, Janet Goebel and Rosalie Goebel.

Michael (Mike) G. Goebel was born the 5th child to Earl and Mathilda Goebel in Wichita, Kansas September 18, 1943.  When he was born, the family lived at Maple & West, the current location of Star Lumber, and later moved to the house on Arapaho.  Mike grew up attending St. Joseph Catholic School and later moved over to the newly built Christ the King Catholic School and was in the first class to graduate 8th grade there.  He attended Kapaun High School.  Mike attended St. Louis University to earn his civil engineering degree.   He met his sweetheart, Linda Brummel, in high school and the two married August 29,^, 1964. They welcomed five children during their 62 years of marriage.  They lived in St. Louis while Mike finished school.  After graduating college Mike worked for Eby Construction as a civil engineer on the Arthur V. Ormond Lock & Dam (L&D 9) on the Arkansas River near Morrilton, Arkansas.  Homesick with a young family, the two jumped at the opportunity to return to Star Lumber after his dad Earl had passed away.  There he worked with his brothers and sister to grow the company and earned his EMBA at Friends University until his abrupt retirement in 2004 when he suffered a traumatic aneurysm.  He was a great listener and many times was known to be able to bring nearly any group to a good consensus!

He bounced back remarkably from his brain injury and could be seen running around west Wichita in his blue Corvette (which was a nice upgrade from years of conversion vans and even an El Comino).  He kept himself busy in retirement playing golf, walking  Zoe, participating in Toastmasters, making hundreds of rosaries to donate to others to inspire a devotion to prayer, attending daily mass and becoming a lay Carmelite.  Mike loved his community and served on several boards such as Wichita Habitat for Humanity, ran ham radio for the Red Cross disaster recovery as well as served as President of the Downtown Lion’s Club where he worked many pancake feeds over the years!  Most importantly Mike was an amazing husband and father dedicating his life to faith and family.  Family trips to Colorado, hours hanging around the pool and many celebrations leave a legacy of lessons and love!

Rosary will be 6:00pm on Thursday July 30th, 2026, with the Funeral Mass being 10:00am on Friday, July 31st, 2026, both at St. Elizabeth Anne Seaton Catholic Church, with entombment following the service at Resurrection Cemetery Mausoleum.
