In Loving Memory of Captain Atnip

It is with profound sadness and deep gratitude for a life well lived that we announce the passing of Kenneth Michael Atnip, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, mentor, and public servant whose life was dedicated to serving others.

For 35 distinguished years with the Wichita Police Department, Captain Atnip exemplified integrity, leadership, and unwavering commitment to protecting and serving his community. Rising through the ranks to retire as a Captain, he earned the respect and admiration of colleagues, community members, and countless individuals whose lives were touched by his service. To him, law enforcement was never simply a career; it was a calling rooted in compassion, courage, and duty.

Beyond his police service, he remained devoted to making Wichita a better place through his involvement with Crime Stoppers, the Crime Commission, and numerous civic organizations. He believed that true leadership meant giving back and helping others succeed. His commitment to community service earned him many honors, including being named Admiral Windwagon Smith, receiving the 12 Apostles Award, and being recognized with the Riverfest Volunteer Award. Each recognition reflected a lifetime spent investing in his city and its people.

While his professional accomplishments were remarkable, his greatest pride and joy were found at home with his family.

He was the devoted and loving husband of 37 years to Mylene Sayler Atnip, his partner, and the love of his life. Together they built a life grounded in faith, loyalty, laughter, and unconditional love.

He was an incredibly proud father to his son, Chase Atnip, and cherished his daughter-in-law, Kenzie, whom he affectionately called his favorite daughter. His eyes lit up most brightly when speaking about his role as “Cap Cap” to his treasured grandchildren, Charlotte and Beau. Nothing brought him greater happiness than time spent with his family, creating memories, sharing stories, and watching the next generation grow. He is also survived by his sisters, April (Kevin) Keller and Jennifer (Kent) Bauman.

Those who knew Nip knew a man of strong character, generous spirit, unwavering loyalty, and a humble heart. He believed life was about service, whether wearing a badge, volunteering in the community, supporting a neighbor, or loving his family. He led by example and left an enduring mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

His legacy is not measured solely by the awards he received or the ranks he achieved, but by the lives he influenced, the community he strengthened, and the family he loved so deeply.

Though he will be greatly missed, his values of service, dedication, kindness, and love will live on through his family and all who had the privilege of calling him a friend.

Memorial Service will be at 10:00 am, Monday, August 17, 2026, at Countryside Christian Church, 1919 S. Rock Rd., Wichita. The service will be live streamed.

Captain Atnip’s watch has ended, but his legacy of service and love will endure forever.
