Carmen Rosa Varela, affectionately known as Crabsy, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family in her home in Wichita, Kansas on September 4, 2026.
Born on October 28, 1974, in Denver, Colorado, Carmen brought joy and laughter into the lives of all who knew her. Described by those who loved her as caring, funny, and loving, she lived a life that reflected these qualities every day.
Carmen attended Trinidad High School, followed by Trinidad State Junior College, and eventually Wichita State University, where she furthered her education and prepared for a life of meaningful contributions and relationships.
A devout Catholic, Carmen’s faith was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her actions and her commitments to her family and community. She found joy in simple pleasures like listening to music and playing with her beloved cats. However, Carmen’s true passion was spending time with her nieces and nephews. She devoted countless hours to their upbringing, offering them unwavering care and support, just as she did for her mother, Concepcion Varela.
Carmen is survived by a large and loving family, including her mother, Concepcion, and her siblings Lucy, Irma, Jon, Ces, Ana, Mattie, Maria, and Joe Varela. She was preceded in death by her father, Andres Varela.
Carmen’s life was a beautiful testament to the power of love and kindness. Her legacy of warmth and generosity will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of her family and friends. Rest in peace, dear Carmen.
