Jay Simon of Wichita, Kansas, passed away on October 13, 2026 at the age of 50.

Jay David Simon was born February 26, 1976 in Wichita, KS, the first child of Randy and Alice Simon. Born in the Bi-Centennial of our Country, he experienced an All-American childhood growing up in the 70’s, 80’s, & 90’s.  As a kid, Jay loved Star Wars, action figures, biking, exploring, video games, and sports. A lifelong Catholic, he attended elementary school at St. Thomas Aquinas and high school at Kapaun Mt. Carmel, both in Wichita. At Kapaun he flourished in the Drama department where he made lasting friendships and had starring roles in plays from Freshman year until Senior year in performances like Grease, West Side Story and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Jay attended college at Regis University in Denver and Wichita State University. He worked in the Hospitality industry as a teenager and throughout his entire working life. He had long careers in Management, where Jay was known by his staff for his fun workplace antics, at both Panera Bread and Freddy’s Frozen Custard, named in honor of his grandpa, Freddy Simon.

Jay traveled extensively throughout his life, visiting Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico, and dozens of states, including Hawaii countless times. His favorite destination was the Lake of the Ozarks on summer trips with his family, including extended family. There, Jay would swim, boat, fish, ski, and explore. When he became old enough, his favorite activity was relaxing by the lake with a good whiskey.

Jay loved music, including the Blues, and R.E.M. was his favorite band. He had a remarkable sense of humor and brought it to all aspects of his life. He loved stand-up comedy, comedy movies and shows, and sketch comedy including Saturday Night Live, Second City, and Kids in the Hall.

Jay was a big sports fan. He adored the St. Louis Cardinals and attended the 2004, 2011, and 2013 World Series with his Dad. He cheered for Shocker basketball, attending hundreds of games throughout his life. Jay was an early fan of UFC and famously hosted parties around the big fights. He started many softball teams and loved a pickup game of basketball in the driveway or wiffle ball in the backyard.

In his 40’s Jay was diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease which left him without the ability to walk, talk, or eat on his own. He was cared for by his parents, family, friends, and his personal devoted caregiver, Shonette, as well as the staff of Regent Park where he resided for the last two and a half years.

Jay was a good-hearted son, grandson, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend who held a special place in the hearts of those close to him.

Jay is survived by his parents, Randy & Alice (Babich) Simon; his sister, Jessica (Jeff) Schwab; his brother, Ben (Rachael) Simon; nieces and nephews, Jude and Danelle Simon and Maris, Avila, Lincoln, and Truman Schwab; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Helen Babich, and Fred and Norma Simon.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I’m sorry for your loss. Jay was always awesome to me and we had a lot of fun together. Thoughts and prayers your way.

  2. So very sorry for the loss of Jay. My brother and I had so many fun memories Trick or Treating that neighborhood together.

  3. So sorry for your loss. Sounds like Jay was a very accomplished and grounded person. Good to see he spent some time on the hallowed grounds of Regis University where we both got our start Randy.

  4. Dear Randy & Alice,

I am so very sorry about Jay’s passing & about the loss that you & Alice are enduring as parents…
Barb & I are participating in your loss & pain…
Jay was a good-looking young man – unfortunately, he got ill without an answer or cure. I am very sorry as this is not the correct order of events!
You, his parents, took care of him without rest & made him comfortable in his struggle… and mostly, he knew that he was deeply loved.

Yes, I met Jay at one of our breakfasts at Chompie’s in Arizona…

On Tue 10/20/26 I will light up a memorial candle & recite the ”Kadish” prayer for his soul. This is an ancient Jewish prayer that is being recited for the soul of the loved one who just passed… this prayer is thousands of years old, it is so ancient that it is recited in Aramaic & not in Hebrew… it will be my honor to pray for his soul & memory!

Randy, you are a good & sincere friend… I have you & your family in my thoughts & prayers!

May Jay Simon’s name & memory be of blessing!

  5. Randy, I am so deeply sorry to hear about the loss of your son Jay. My heart is completely broken for you and your family. I am thinking of you.

  6. Alice & Randy & Family,
such heartbreaking news! Jay was an amazing young man with such a big heart! Sending my love & Peace to all!

  7. My heart goes out to Randy, Alice, Ben and Jessi and all of Jay’s nieces and nephews. He was one of the sweetest persons I’ve ever known. I hope there is some consolation that he is free from pain and among all of his family and friends in heaven.

  8. Dear Alice and Randy,

It wasn’t until Jay was diagnosed with Huntington disease (HD) that our professional paths crossed. It quickly became clear that Jay could not have asked for more devoted caregivers than the two of you. Your love, commitment, and selflessness were evident throughout his journey. Jay’s willingness to participate in a clinical trial was a remarkable act of generosity. Through his participation, he helped advance research into a medication intended to address the movement symptoms of HD, contributing to the progress toward FDA approval. His desire to help others, even while facing so much himself, speaks volumes about the kind of person your raised. Jay was a consistently grateful person who fought a courageous and difficult battle against a relentless, progressive disease. As HD gradually took away his independence, it never took away his desire to help others, his determination to remain as independent as possible, or his willingness to offer a BIG HUG!. Those simple, beautiful expressions of who he was will remain meaningful to all who knew him. None of us is promised a long life, but Jay’s life reminds us that what matters most is how we live the time we are given. It is comforting to know that, despite the tremendous challenges he faced, Jay lived his life to the fullest and left a lasting legacy through his courage, generosity, and willingness to help others.
