Bernard L. Hansen

Hansen, Capt. Bernard L., U.S. Navy Retired, died January 16, 2013 in Wichita, KS, at the age of 88. He was born on July 11, 1924, on a farm in northeastern Nebraska. He graduated from high school in Winside, NE in 1941, enlisted in the Navy in October 1942, was commissioned in the Navys Civil Engineer Corps in January 1945, and served on active duty for over 33 years during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam Conflict. He was awarded the Bronze Star (with combat “V”), the Navy Commendation Medal, and the Legion of Merit. He received BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering from Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute. After retiring from the Navy in 1978, he settled in the Kansas City area, and then moved to Wichita in 2002. He was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Barbara Woodward, of Erie, PA; his brother, George W. Hansen (Nancy) of Bowling Green, VA; and his sister, Helen Stahlnecker of Grand Island, NE. He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Soles (David) of Wichita, KS; his brother, Norris Hansen (Effie) of Wayne, NE; his sister, Alice Olin of Crosby, ND; and nine nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 P.M., Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Larksfield Place, in Wichita, KS. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
