Betty Barnes Murfin

Murfin, Betty Barnes (Gaines), age 92, passed away Friday, February 27, 2015. Services will be 10:30 A.M., Saturday, March 7, 2015, at Eastminster Presbyterian Church. Betty was a wonderful mother, loving grandmother and friend to all. Betty was born June 2, 1922 to Harry and Fannie Gaines in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. She was a lifetime resident of Wichita. Betty graduated from East High School and attended the University of Kansas. Betty was married to Bill Murfin in 1946 and they were blessed with three children. While raising her family Betty enjoyed being a member of many clubs and organizations to include: Kappa Alpha Theta, Wichita Center for the Arts, Wichita Junior League, Garden Club, The Kansas Humane Society, and she became the originating President of the Wichita Art Museum. Betty shared her knowledge and experience serving on the boards of the Wichita Center for the Arts and Underground Vaults and Storage. Bettys love of life is beautifully displayed in her art work and was evident in her generous smile, kind works, always upbeat personality, infectious curiosity and love of animals. Betty never heard a song that didnt start her to tapping and would tell you that, “music is in me, just look at my feet wiggling!” Betty is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, William R. Murfin; her brother, Harry Gaines, Jr.; her sister, Patricia Gaines Talbott. She is survived by daughter, Barbara Murphy (Mike); son, David Murfin (Janet); daughter, Nancy Moxley (Mark); ten grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and nephew, Dr. Gaines Talbott. Memorials have been established with the Wichita Center for the Arts, 9112 E. Central, Wichita, KS 67206 and the Kansas Humane Society, 3313 N. Hillside, Wichita, KS 67219.
