John Reed Schountz, 63, made the decision to end his courageous battle from complications of heart surgery, surrounded by family, on Wednesday, November 8, 2023. He was an excellent athlete and was a member of Wichita South High School’s first State Championship basketball team in 1978. Reed continued playing basketball at Newman University and Pittsburg State University. After earning a bachelor’s degree in business from Newman University and working at various companies, he founded a sprinkler system/landscape business that he operated until his retirement. An avid golfer, earning three holes in one, he played many times each year with friends and family. He immensely enjoyed conversing and had a remarkable supply of one-liners to share. Known as “uncle” to not only his nieces and nephews, but also to many others, he will be missed. Visitation will be from 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M., Friday, November 17, 2023, at Downing & Lahey West Mortuary. Funeral Service will be at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, November 18, 2023, at St. John’s Chapel at Newman University. Graveside service will be 11:00 am, Friday, December 1, 2023, at Greenwood Cemetery - Oatville. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with: Newman University - Jet Open, 3100 McCormick St., Wichita, KS 67213. Preceded in death by his parents, John and Elizabeth Schountz; sister, Robbi C. Heck. Survived by his sisters, Jackie Strong of Katy, TX, Jennifer Schountz of Wichita, KS; brother, Tony Schountz of Ft. Collins, CO; brother-in-law, Larry Heck of Wichita, KS; nephews, Matthew Heck, John Strong, Nicolas Schountz; nieces, Ashley Schountz, Lauren Schountz. Share tributes online at: www.dlwichita.com

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I was just thinking about Reed today so I did a search and was shocked to hear the news. I remember listening to some games Reed played on the radio and thinking how cool it was to have a basketball star on the block. Perhaps he’s a star in heaven too. Thoughts and prayers to all who knew and loved Reed.

  2. I went to High School and College with Reed, but I hadn’t seen him since. Always a nice guy. My sympathies to his family and friends!
