Margaret Ann Moore, of Wichita, passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at the age of 87.

Margaret is remembered as a compassionate caregiver to all living things…be they plants, animals, or people. She planted seeds that blossomed into beautiful flowers. She carried with her a quiet, patient disposition throughout her life, humbly putting the needs of others before her own. She nurtured the young, befriend the lonely, and cared for the sick and elderly.

Born in 1938, Margaret grew up on a family farm in west Wichita with her mother, father, brother and sister. Her early life was surrounded by Horneckers, Rogers, and Dixons. She was a model 4-H student, cheerleader, and homecoming queen at Goddard schools before graduating in 1956 along with 14 classmates. She wrote in her senior yearbook, ā€œThe more I see of men, the more I like my dog.ā€

Margaret then followed in her mother’s footsteps and entered the St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing operated by the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother. During nursing school, she made life-long friends, and upon graduation in 1958, she became a second-generation registered nurse.

In February1960 she married Howard Moore. They built a family and home together in west Wichita, on the same lands that she was raised. She and Howard were active members of the Goddard United Methodist Church. Her three children also graduated from Goddard High School.

In her nursing career that spanned over 40 years, Margaret cared for thousands of patients, and worked with multiple surgeons, including Dr. Harold Bowman, Dr. Willard Kiser, Dr. John Kiser, Dr. Paul Harrison, among others. She retired in 2005, last working at Kansas Surgical Associates.

In 2001, Margaret became a lovely grandmother who introduced her granddaughter to the adventures and music of VeggieTales, as well as the whimsical words of Runny Babbit. Their laugher and joy together created a bond that is eternal.

Upon retirement, Margaret became a volunteer at The Klothes Kloset, a program of United Methodist Open Door that provides free clothing for infants, children and adults in Wichita. She also faithfully tended to her flower gardens, including her favorite peonies and iris.

She and Howard moved to The Dove in Goddard in August 2024. There she established a new network of friends and became reconnected to those of her past, thereby completing the circle of life. She will be missed and always loved by her family and friends.

She is survived by sister Mary Lyon of Wichita, husband of 66 years Howard Moore, children Sheryl Moore of Kansas City, MO, Mike Moore and his spouse Joni Moore of Salado, TX, and Troy Moore and his spouse Jacqueline Guajardo of West Hartford, CT, and granddaughter Isabella Guajardo-Moore of Brooklyn, NY. She was predeceased by her parents Charles and Laverne Hornecker (1978 and 2000, respectively), her aunt Juanita Griffin (2004) and her brother David Hornecker (2006).

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Margaret was my only sister in law. She was always kind and fun to be with. One of my special memories was when we were together at my sisters house in Shell Knob Mo. We had to ride down a very, very steep hillside down to the lake, in the back of Jim Wulz’s Gator, my wife Judy got to ride Shotgun. Needless to say, Margaret & I were tossed around a lot in the back! I remember how Margaret, and I laughed & laughed as we bounced around in back of that green Gator! She, and I had some fun at our bodies expense that Day! I’ll miss my only sister in law Margaret Moore! May GOD BLESS HER FAMILY!

  2. My deepest sympathy šŸ’ She will always be remembered by all of her family and friends.

  3. Sending loads of love to the whole family. She was very loved and adored by Bella

  4. Dear Margret:

    Apple pie…lemon meringue pie…green rice…veggie tales…runny babbit
    ..a loving, kind husband… a playful, strong daughter… selfless, unconditional love…

These are the gifts for which I am eternally grateful. I will carry your love and memories across generations and time until we meet again.

  5. Dear Aunt Margaret – it is times like this when it is hard to live so far away. You were an amazing aunt, and I was blessed that I got to be your niece. I enjoyed coming to visit you and Uncle Howard whenever we came to Wichita to see my family. You endured my three sons as they could be a handful – especially Dylan – as they would ask so many questions and run around the house. I am sure you were thankful when my dad and Uncle Howard would let them run wild outside. You were so loving to them and that meant so much to me. I am truly going to miss you. I love you and will miss you.

To my cousins and your families, you had the best mom. I am so sorry for your loss. Love you all, Tammy.

  6. Margaret was an amazing nurse and mentor. She taught me so much when I worked with her at Kansas Surgical Consultants. Her patients absolutely loved her!
We always loved it when she brought in her chocolate/peanutbutter/Rice Krispie dessert! It was delicious!
Spring and summer time we always had fresh flowers from her gardens!
Most importantly she loved her family and would keep us updated on what everyone was doing.
Thoughts and prayers for you all

  7. For years Margaret and Howard were our pew buddies at church. Margaret was always so sweet and kind.

    Susan Sleder

  8. I knew Margaret in the 1970s as a child.
The light of her kindness shined into my heart and made me feel safe and well. I know she did the same for her patients. I am so glad I got to visit her over the years. Sad to think she has left us.

  9. Margaret truly one of the kindest, sweetest, humble people I have ever known. My mom, Lois Moore, always spoke so highly of Margaret. St.Francis of Assisi quoted “Preach the Gospel constantly, if necessary, use words.” Margaret lived this. I am sorry for your loss..what a beautiful soul.

  10. I was the flower girl in Margie and Howard’s wedding. What an awesome lady she was! I would see her each year when my mother, her cousin Ruth Blythe, would have a luncheon for her Mother and Aunt Juanita. Margie, Mary, cousins Naomi Kice and Kathleen Adams would all be there to celebrate. Precious memories. Love and prayers for blessed perfect peace for the family. I will look forward to seeing you again in Heaven!
    Much love,
    Becca Ann Blythe Martindale
