Mary L. (McGlynn) Godfrey, of Wichita and formerly of Liberal, left this world on Monday, June 16, 2014, after an extended battle with cancer. Mary was born April 14, 1931 to the late Edward Simon McGlynn and Gertrude (Ebert) McGlynn in back of her grandparents general merchant store in Bushton, Kansas. She grew up on a farm in rural Rice County along with her now deceased sister, Jane. In Lyons, Mary met her true love, John Richard “Dick” Godfrey, and after accomplishing their college degrees, they married and embarked upon a challenging, yet fruitful life together. Mary was a loving wife, an outstanding mother of four, the center of her family and an active community volunteer. During that time, she discretely served several nonprofits including the Board of Trustees of Seward County Community College. She leaves to mourn her passing: her four children, Rosanne Kelley (Larry) of Wichita, David Godfrey (fianc, Tricia Mielke) of San Antonio, TX, Susan Melton (Doug) of Riverside, MO and Thomas Godfrey (Pam) of Tulsa, OK. She also leaves eight grandchildren, Michele Johnston, Heather Decker (Cody), Mary Witherow, Michael Godfrey (Andrea), Jamie Melton, Niklas Melton, Madalyn Godfrey and Jonathan Godfrey, plus four great-grandchildren, Blake Melton, Colton Melton, Michelle Witherow and Finnegan Decker. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial gifts to the Richard Godfrey Scholarship at SCCC/ATS Foundation, Via Christi Foundation Oncology Fund, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church or a charity of your choice. Rosary will be said, 7 p.m., Thursday, June 19; Funeral Mass, 10 a.m., Friday, June 20, both at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Wichita. Graveside service will be held at the Lyons Cemetery in Lyons. Downing Lahey Mortuary West.
