She was a sociology major and graduated from Wichita State University in 1958 as a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. In 1959, she was crowned Miss Wichita and Art realized it was time to make a move. Shortly thereafter they married as high school sweethearts. They enjoyed over four decades together until his death in July of 2004.Above all else, she loved her family. Gigi was kind, spunky, and always stayed true to her convictions. She was an excellent cook and loved to entertain in her younger years. In addition to three children, Joan and Art successfully raised several dogs, cats, and a parrot. Their love for animals continues to live on in subsequent generations.Wichita State lost its most avid fan and loyal booster on August 16th. Gigi loved all things sports and everything about her alma mater, but Shocker basketball held a special place in her heart. She was a constant presence in the WSU stands and recorded every away game. Outside of Wichita, Gigi loved watching the Chiefs and Royals succeed. During her free time, she was an active member of Junior League, DAR, investment clubs, and the Maureen Connolly Brinker Tennis Foundation of Kansas. She was a great tennis player and very proud that her children and grandchildren shared her love of the game. 1. I am so sorry to hear of Joan’s death. I cannot express my incompetence at reading the obituary correctly. I have no idea how I thought the funeral was today the 16th… I had every intention of being there to see you all in person. Mom and Dad left for 2 months in Florida with my brother Shawn and sister-in-law Sheryl on the 7th. Maybe in the turmoil of getting them off was too much for my brain. Joan was a wonderful woman and I know this is a big loss to many of you but especially to those I knew best Julie and Jill. I would love to see you if we could arrange anything… coffee, lunch??? Mom sends her love and condolences and I was coming to represent our family to yours that was so important a part of ours for so many years. Love and prayers to you all Cindy Bennett Harmon
