Gary Higgins

Gary Higgins, 76, of Wichita, Kansas, passed away on August 18, 2026. He was born on February 22, 1950, in Wichita, Kansas, to Robert Higgins and Loretta Kelly, the middle of four children — with one older brother and twin younger sisters.

From an early age, Gary was known for a quiet, thoughtful nature. Loss came early to the family — his father and his twin sisters all passed away when Gary was still young — and those who knew him observed how the early experience of grief shaped the reserved, steady man he became. Rather than seeking attention for himself, his habit was to observe carefully, listen patiently, and speak only when he had something worth saying. Family and friends often remarked that a few words from Gary carried more weight than others’ long speeches.

Gary spent most of his life in Wichita, Kansas, one that was defined not by grand gestures but by quiet consistency — showing up, doing the work, and taking care of the people and things that mattered. Though he never married or had children of his own, he found his own kind of fulfillment in a smaller, quieter circle of family and friends.

Gary spent most of his working life as a heating and air conditioning mechanic. It was work that suited him well — steady, hands-on, and honest, the kind of job where a problem got solved quietly and correctly without any fuss. Colleagues remember him as dependable and skilled, someone who preferred to let the quality of his work speak for itself rather than seeking recognition.

Outside of work, Gary found contentment in solitary pursuits and hobbies. Music was one of his constant companions: he enjoyed playing guitar as well as listening to music.

He lived next door to his mother Loretta in her later years and was always there for her when she needed help.

After retiring from his work as a heating and cooling technician, Gary spent his remaining time as a landlord, doing all of the maintenance work on his building himself. In this way, he served tenants and created a safe and comfortable place for them to live.

Gary is survived by his brother, Patrick Higgins; his nephew, Ryan Higgins; and his nieces, Hanae Nosti and Scarlett Higgins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Higgins and Loretta Kelly, and his twin sisters. Barbara and Judy Higgins.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at Ascension Cemetery in Bel Aire, KS.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105, a cause close to Gary’s heart.

Gary will be remembered not for how much he said, but for how much he meant — a quiet presence, guitar often nearby, whose steadiness, kindness, and gentle strength touched everyone fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
