James “Jim” D. Kobbe, 64, died Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

He was born on May 10, 1962, in Wichita, KS. Jim grew up in Douglass and graduated from Douglass High School and the University of Kansas. He had careers as a sports broadcaster, most notably at KWCH-TV and KSN-TV in Wichita, and as a Human Resources representative at Boeing and Spirit Aerosystems in Wichita.

Jim is survived by his stepfather, Frank Baker of Gulfport, MS; sister, Jackie (Larry) Combs of Wichita; brother, Bryant McLaren of Friendswood, TX; brother, Chuck (Cindy) Kobbe of Monkton, MD; 8 nieces and nephews; 11 great-nieces and nephews.

Memorial Service will be at 1:00 pm, Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Downing & Lahey East Mortuary. Services will be live streamed and available to view by clicking on the “Watch Funeral Services” button below.

  1. His loss is immense, his legacy immeasurable; and he would likely be embarrassed to see himself described in this way. Jim was a force of positivity for many and always there for me. I was blessed to call him my friend for many, many years and will miss him so
    much. My sympathies to all mourning his passing and especially to his family of whom he spoke often and fondly. Peace to the hearts of all. Rest easy, Kobra!

  2. Proud to call Jim one of my best buddies and one of my favorite people. I’ll greatly miss his wit, his character and his ability to tell a story unlike anyone I’ve ever met. Most of all I’ll miss his well-placed barbs. When Jim would tease you, he had a way of making you feel loved. What a rare gift. What a phenomenal human being.

  3. Jim was one of the most special people I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing. He was kind, thoughtful and generous to a fault. My life is better for having had him in it. The loss to those left behind is immeasurable.

  4. I first met Jim when he was a trainer at Boeing, he was so patient with me and really was a great instructor. We then worked on some video projects for my department teaching customers how to turn in trouble tickets and finally was an awesome help with our recycling team.
    We had fun times working together. Gid Bless this sweet soul.

  5. I loved getting to know Jim and Chuck as students at Douglass High School. Jim was the kind of student who gave me joy and helped make my job fun. He was always full of humor and wit much to the delight of everyone. Later on he became one who returned to us to share his life skills with his students. He was one of the people who helped establish an adventure in broadcasting for our students. Jim always made time to come back to us as a guest speaker. He was able to speak to the students and always made the faculty feel like our school remained special in his heart. To know Jim was to love him. RIP Jim, love, Jo

  6. Such a great loss. Jim was a pleasure to work with at KWCH. “Kobra” was on the sports desk during many of the years I was producing in news. He was always reliable and went above and beyond his duties. If he saw me carrying a box loaded with three-quarter inch tapes to the control room just before 5:00, he would often grab the box out of my hand and take it back for me. He was very witty and an incredibly talented broadcaster. Rest in peace, Jim. You will be missed. Our condolences to the family.
